As some of you know, I don't generally drink anymore. I will have a beer or a rum/coke on vacation or a wedding or party but I generally don't b/c I hate drugs that affect motor coordination.

This past Saturday, Kerry and I went to a St. Patricks party with friends. We stopped to get the host a 12 of Mic Ultra since that what he drinks. We all were out on the deck at one point, where I decided that I'd have a beer so I asked the guys which cooler had the weakest tasting beer since Mic sucks to me. I was handed a Miller.

I should tell at this point that alcohol hits me nearly instantly.....I can actually feel it in my mouth before I even swallow it.

I drank almost exactly half of that beer and I was done. Leaning against the deck rail, I had no urge to walk anywhere for fear of stumbling.

OK, so after watching those 6 guys polish off nearly 40 bottles and still act right I realized that my "drinking" has gotten rookie all over it since I quit drinking in 8/91. So who here is a pro?

No pro here...I've gotten to the point (age?) where more than a little alcohol often gives me acid reflux. i limit myself to a rare Margarita with Mexican food or a cold beer after hot weather yard work and i never drive after imbibing. Pretty sure I dodged many bullets driving in my youth though. But then again those were "different" times.

So who here is a pro?

Jeff, I’m a pro.

My grandfather was a brewmaster at one of the local breweries in San Fran where I grew up. Can’t remember which one, it was either Hamms or Burgie. Anyway, when we went to visit Grandma and Grandpa, the latter always gave me a glass of beer after the adults all were served their cocktails. It was only a 6 oz. glass, but still – I was only five years old at the time – and I was drinking like an adult. From that point on, I loved beer.

Fast forward to the present. 22+ years in the Navy (26+ if you count Canoe-U). Lots of drinking during that period. It was frowned upon if you didn’t, but I was at the point where I didn’t need to be “brow-beated” to head to the Club. I retired from the Nav in 2001, but still love the beer.

(FYI: Nowadays, most military bases don’t even have O-Clubs…if they do, they are ‘all-hands’ clubs. The paradigm has definitely shifted to where it is not ok anymore to drink to excess. I suppose that’s a good thing overall, but part of me missed the old days.)

Anyhow Jeff, was doing the math of the beers drank at your party, and that only came out to 6 beers/person. Back in the day, the soberest of the group would realize they were running out of beer at that point, and they needed to head out to the local package store to replenish.

So yeah, I was (and still am) a pro. Not necessarily proud of that anymore though.

"...but still love the beer." reminds me of someone mentioned in the news lately. Is your nickname Bart, Squee?

Eagle, didn't know you were a San Francisco boy? I was born and raised, and still am 7 miles out in DalyCity. It was Hamms brewery at 16th and Potrero. The ball park, the old Seal stadium was across the street. That was the stadium just before the Giants came to SF, in 1958. They had Candlestick ready for the 1960 season. Their was a big ole glass at the top of the stadium advertising the beer, that was brought to you all game long. It was the sign you could see above the central 101 freeway. You could get plowed for 25 cents a cup. Then drive home in your 57 Chevy/Ford. Oh the good old irresponsible days. Get drunk, and drive home with no seat belts. If you got pulled over, and didn't hit anybody, the cop usual drove your car home for you. Dui's we're rare back then.

Holy Cow Moose, I forgot all about that glass! It was a huge neon glass that would 'fill' up with beer when (according to my dad), it was lit when the plant was brewing beer. Even had a white neon top of the glass to simulate 'beer foam'.
Yep Moose, an SF native. Born 63 years ago this Sunday, at Mary's Help Hospital. St. Brendan's for grade school, SI for high school. Great memories of the location you mentioned above. My dad told me about Seals stadium, watched more than a few games at the 'Stick! Finally, payback in '10, '12, and '14! Purchased Jeremy Affeldt's shirt he wore as the winning pitcher in game 7 vs the Royals. Still a huge Giants' fan - in floodville.

I tell people this all the time and they look at you like you have 3 heads! Used to be when you got pulled over drunk, the cop followed you home or one of them drove it home like you said, or let you call someone to come get car and give you a ride home in squad car.
People used to run into mailboxes or up on the curb an decide they had too much to drink...Ya think?? But not like what it became later.
Should we all blame mad mothers?? Just kidding. I guess accidents became too high of numbers. Maybe not. ...Hmmm Maybe it happened just like things are happening now and more laws and restictions came in the name of safety. HMMM

We started an agency back in the 70's here in the Bay area. We named it DAMM. Drunks against mad mother's! Wasn't too popular, but my friends supported it!

Sounds like you guys would sit and share a couple dozen? Small world ain't it?

LOL....Oh God the early years were filled with so much stuff you could NEVER get away with today. Even in the 80's it was still mostly ok.....I even had a cop, after seeing that I really only had 3-4 miles to go, tell me to "close one eye" to focus and be careful....then he let me GO! What he didn't know was that I already had one eye closed when I had nearly run into the ditch....which is why he lit me up in the 1st place.

I admit though in my youth, I didn't drink at all. I rode bikes so I smoked...say what you will but it was a lot safer than drinking though.

I was the same way Jeff. I rode my dirt bikes, worked on them and others for profit. And never drank. I started at around 20, due to hanging out with a different crowd, the party gang. Funny you talk about cops being so much easier in early days. I remember driving my wife's Toyota Celica, with one of those 3 part pull up antennas. Well I was enjoying one of our oldies stations, and driving through an area that was messing with the signal. As usual, I had a Budweiser bottle opened, and had a good buzz going, think it was the 4th of 6. I pulled over, not thinking grabbed the bottle, walked around to r/f fender, and the cop pulled up behind me. Thinking the worst, he said and I quote, that ain't cool! It's ok to drink and drive, he said, but you've got to be cooler about it. He said pour out the beer, and get out of here! Could you imagine any cop doing that today? That was 1978.

I think it's funny as hell watching the "news" where they "go back in time" to look at things we had/did. Their combined "disgusted reactions" say everything about who they are as people. They were watching kids jump spyder-bikes, like we all did, a thousand times, oh, no, WITHOUT helmets<LMAO>...then we went to play lawn darts....

and come on guys...you all played just like we did....foot in the middle, last one to run wins, first one out is a *****, now toss that dart straight up!

How many of us recall the conversation that ALWAYS took place under the soaring/falling dart: "you see it?" Nope, you?, "nope" "Where is it, I think it went straight up?" THUNK, right next to one of you......Darwin ruled the day and made us better men for it!

78....yeah Moose, them days are over. I tell you though, I'm SO glad I grew up when I did....all the crap I got away with before 23.....geez, you'd never be able to do what we did, too many ways to get caught today. As much as I didn't like them at the time, we've also got to give a tip of the hat to the hippies....who taught all those daughters that it was "ok". Yes, they did bring us sex, drugs and rock & roll. lol

I don't drink! I made way too many mistakes when I was younger so I decided to remove it from my life. Nothing worse than going out on the bike, getting hammered and not remembering the ride home. It was a real eye opener for me and I needed to kill it before I got busted or didn't make it home.

I remember when a cop pulled up behind my girl and me at the local make out area and spot lighted us then took off. Next day came into gas station I worked at and said he was sorry for the interruption New My Mustang well. Also got locked up in NY underage drinking in bar Fine was like $20.00. NY. Was 18 at the time and lived in NJ. Seat belt what was that?? Rode in parents station wagon laying down in cargo area mostly asleep.
Say Mr. Moose why was the stadium called candle stick park?? Always wondered.I'm and east coast guy.

Because it's built right below Candlestick point. It's believed it's named after the indigenous Candlestick bird, that occupied the area. Nobody knows for sure, but that's the story that's told and believed. I was always under the impression that it was like our Twin peaks above the city, that was shaped like a well endowed pair of you know! The points behind the Stadium are not candle shaped. I'm gonna go with the bird story.

Pro turned amateur here. I got up to 3/4 of a 1.5L of vodka per day back in my 20s. Right now I am on my third beer for the year (no other alcohol this year). I don't really like drinking anymore.

Get your blood pressure checked. 1/2 of beer, should have no effect on a adult of normal weight. You could be 'punch drunk'.

If Jeff was a woman, he'd be a cheap date. 1/2 a beer or wine, and getting all tipsy! Better than the one girl that was part camel. She'd could out drink me back in the day. Was fun in the beginning, when we all drank, and did everything else bad, but a year later, wasn't so fun. That and a drunk girl is never fun out in public. Always had to keep a short leash on her. Needless to say, the relationship didn't last too long.
