what’s up guys I’m new to the forum and have many questions... I own a 2016 and Im looking for a performance intercooler upgrade any ideas? I’ve searched without much luck, but I found one that also fits a 2011-2014 f150 not sure if that’s right or not is it the same engine? This all started after a cylinder2 misfire, I’ve replaced every ignition coil and spark plug. I was thinking it might have something to do with the CAI installed, but had it checked out by a mechanic buddy of mine he said that there was an intercooler problem that forced water into the engine and based on what he seen on the scanner points to the intercooler. So now I’m looking to upgrade it, plus I might as well upgrade the blowoff valve while I’m at it, something that will give off good sound any ideas?

Welcome to the Expedition Forum!

FWIW, the intercooler's condensation issue was supposedly fixed with the design that went into the '15+ Expeditions.

Consider posting any codes so that others may chime-in versus throwing more parts at it.

Also, posting project goals will help with inputs toward options.

The misfire due to moisture in IC was resolved in the 2011-2014 f150s. I’ve never heard of this issue in the expedition as they came out with the ecoboost after the F-150 issue. You probably have something else going wrong. However, the 2011-2014 ICs fit our 15-17 Expeditions. I’ve confirmed this with mishimoto as that is the IC I’m purchasing. That being said, not many fill allow an aftermarket BOV (plus they sound like shit on these v6s). Be advised, in order to get any benefit from an IC, you will need the cold and hot side charge pipes upgraded, a CAI (not completely necessary but will help) and the most important part, a custom tune to calibrate the ECU for the larger IC surface area and airflow. So you’re looking at about $1000- $1500 for all that.

I would save your money and look else ware for your issue bc your buddy is probably just going off of F-150 issues from 2014

@Muddy Bean had the intercooler problem on his 2015 which caused him misfires and lack of power. He drilled a hole and problem solved

Yes, exactly. It seems that they tried to resolve it a different way in the 15-17 Expys, but apparently it does not work all the time. Drilling the small hole seems to resolve it. Search for his posts and you should see an explanation.

Thanks for all the information, as for the codes I did say it was a cylinder 2 misfire but I guess for more clarification its p0302. And I do have a k&n CAI installed. Head gasket is Good as well as the fuel pressure and I didnt find any vac leaks, so I’m not sure what else besides moisture buildup from the intercooler could be the problem. I did see a video about placing a small hole on the bottom of the intercooler, but that will just be a temporary fix as I’m looking to upgrade for performance.

Have you purchased a custom tune? If so I’m interested and would like to know what you have

Yes I have a 5 star custom 93 performance tune
Nice... I’ve seen them online will definitely buy. Last question I have for you since you mentioned the hot and cold charge pipes, I haven’t seen any upgrades that fit the 16 expedition, would they also be the ones that fit the 13-14 f150?

That is correct. When the second gen ecoboost motor came out (2015+ F150s and 2018+ Expeditions) the ICs and charge pipe configurations changed. I would look at mishimoto website under 2014 F-150.

I’ll chime in,

As others have mentioned, I had multiple cylinder misfires on my truck last year while towing my camper across the US. I had changed all my plugs and coil packs for the associated cylinders listed in the code scanner but it didn’t fix the issue and the truck ran terrible. I had just driven through a major elevation and temperature change so I thought maybe there was condensation buildup in the intercooler and even though the problem is supposedly fixed in our ecoboost expeditions I drilled the hole anyway while parked at autozone somewhere in California. Immediate oily juice came out and after two days of the truck running terrible and throwing multiple cylinder misfires, it immediately fixed the issue and I haven’t had it since. I’m 100% convinced we still have a moisture buildup issue in the IC that causes us to have misfires as the spark plugs are essentially “blown out” by the moisture. Solved my problem at that was a year ago. I now have 136,000 miles on my 2015 Ecoboost and haven’t had any issues.

First off both are wrong, the Wagner IC doesn’t have the option for our BOV so that won’t work at all. Second, the mishimoto IC you posted is for a 2015-2016 f150 which will also not work as it’s different dimensions then our 15-17 expeditions.

Here is the correct one that Ive verified all measurements on with mishimoto for 2015-2017 expeditions. We cannot use 15-17 f150 ICs or charge pipes as the configurations are completely different
