I'm planning on upgrading to wider and bigger tires (33s) on my 2019 Ford Expedition Max Limited (so its got the 20s now). Since the tire is bigger, I assume I either need to ditch the spare or get a bigger tire. What has everyone else done? Is it worth it to spend the extra $300 on the wheel and get everything matching or should I reuse the spare tire wheel? Does anyone know what size spare will fit?

Wheels - 18x9 Method 309 Grid Matte Titanium w/ Matte Black Lip MR30989016818
Tires - LT285/75R18 E Nitto Ridge Grappler M/T-A/T Hybrid Radial Tire 217-560

Just an FYI...

Those tires are 35” and not 33”.

Also, they will probably not fit without a lift and some trimming.

I have the methods running a 275/70/18 which is a 33.5" tire and left the spare as stock. Unless you are doing some serious off roading and plan on having flats often I would just leave it as stock under there. It really wont do much to your vehicle if you have to run it a few hundred miles with the spare on if you ever get a flat. I just wouldnt do it for prolonged amount of time but to get you home and to get the tire fixed shouldn't cause any major issues.

While I don't have personal proof of damage, I would never run a mismatched spare for any distance, unless "I had to."

And by had to, life and limb were at stake, the tire could not be plugged or patched (even temporarily), and there were no flat bed/AAA services in sight. Even a minor mismatch over time can add to wear and driveline slop.

And for those with large tires that won't fit under the well, I am working on a tailgate solution and an extended range tank in it's place...

The spare is there to get you home, not to run all year. Let the spare alone and use it if you need to. Put it on the front if you are worried about the rear gear set and let it in 2H and it will never know the difference.
