As anyone up on the news may have assumed, there will be a huge demand for automotive gun safes in the coming months. In New York, where keeping a pistol locked in a car was always frowned upon, new legislation will require that it remains locked up in my car whenever I enter an establishment where money is used.

Anyway, the point of this post is to remind anyone who may need one to get it now while it's available. Console Vault, which makes the Ford OEM safes has a 20% off sale. I ordered one for my 2008 truck for $230. The 4th Generation Expedition safe is also available from Lock'er Down and they're made in USA. Probably some import junk out there too that's cheaper and of lesser quality. But it's on you if it's pried open with a plastic spoon.

Best of luck to you.

I have a Ford-branded Console Vault that I have been using since 2015. I can't imagine having a vehicle without one now. Clearly, if someone really wants to get into it they will, but the vast majority of auto break-ins are smash-and-grabs so I consider it good protection.

In other words if you get out of the vehicle you have to secure it? I'm fairly certain every establishment I've entered in my life uses money...

In New York, guns will be banned from "sensitive areas" which include (among dozens of places) anyplace things are sold. So if I go into a store or restaurant, I'll have to lock the firearm in the car. Sounds unsafe to me, but I just follow rules. Last week NY considered this criminal; soon it will be the new rule. So while my firearm never left my side, now I need a console safe.

So if you'll need one, get it while you can. I suspect they'll be quite a demand.

Beware that most states have strict laws about "hidden compartments" in vehicles. Seems you cannot get creative either.

False. A handful of states have laws that prohibit secret compartments and most (all?) of those only explicitly prohibit compartments used for (or intended to be used for) illegal items.

Console Vault(tm) for my 2017 was out of stock for well over 6 months. Was delivered last week and installed in roughly 10 minutes. You lose the coin tray and, unlike my 2007 Console Volt, the actual console lid can't be closed unless the vault lid is closed first -- the 2007 would push the vault lid closed and allow it to spring open when lifted. Minor hassle. One (1) USB port remains available with the lid locked although the cable is almost too short.

Someone at the local Ford dealer tried to break into my console 5 or 6 years ago and slightly sprung the lid which is how I knew. Unsuccessful and I was able to repair it easily. With all the plastic the console itself can certainly be smashed with the right tools -- this ain't gonna stand up to a crow bar or angle grinder! -- but the little vault does stop the console being a target of opportunity.

The new vault has a Ford logo and the box has Ford labels so this may be a dealer accessory too.

Never leave a firearm locked in a vehicle. This is how criminals obtain them. I carry mine concealed everywhere. In the malls, in the banks, in the theaters, in restaurants, in baggage claim in airports (is not part of a secure checkpoint). I do not carry them in police stations or court buildings which I never have to go to anyway...but those are the places likely to have metal detectors. The criminal there to cause harm doesn't care about the little sign on the door and neither should you.

No one knows you have it on you. I'd rather have the option to fight back than become a victim. Always carry it.

This is what I learned and lived by for the past 40 years. Never left my side.

New York just past legislation that requires firearms to be locked in an auto safe if I enter any business, church, school or street where homeless people may live or where someone may be protesting.

If I don't leave it in my car, I commit a Class E felony with mandatory jail time. A life saving choice?

Seems like lots of guns will be stolen from cars and lots of car safes will be sold.

So WTF is the point of a cc permit if you can't carry it? So, you only can carry it in your car or walking down the street but don't go into a store? Hell you can't even go to church.

There is no point in getting a concerled carry permit in New York 'cuz New York does NOT want anyone to carry concealed -- or openly -- so for years they refused to issue permits for other than the anointed. Now the SCOTUS says they "must issue" so they immediately adopted rules restricting where one can carry concealed. Can't carry anywhere. But you're safer because no one will be carrying concealed because it's illegal. If you believe that last sentence you probably believe in the Easter Bunny.

You can keep the firearm unloaded in your console safe (with the identity-stamped ammo elsewhere). Then when you want to take a walk down the street, you make sure there are no protests on that street, no homeless congregating or children known to play there, you can remove your firearm, load and carry it. But it has to go back in the console safe if you want to buy an ice cream, or you commit a felony. Just make sure no one sees it. If they claim to, that's a felony too.

So console safes are now very important now for the million New Yorkers with pistol licenses. But a month ago we could be arrested for leaving a firearm in a console safe.

FYI: I bought a Console Vault from them about a year or two ago. For my 2015, They told me that there is a difference between the Console for a XLT and the other (Limited/Plat) Expeditions. If I had a XLT, I would need the 2014 year model of the Vault. I sent her a bunch of pics to confirm ahead of time. Sure enough the 2014 Console in my 2015 XLT was perfect fit.

SO if you have a XLT and are thinking of buying one, give them a call and make sure to identify that you are buying for XLT so you get the correct model.

My 2008 Console Safe arrived today (ordered from the manufacturer last week) and installed like a breeze. Can still use my coin holders too. A nice, hidden and moderate security holder for anything of some value. Could be pried open but it would take the right tool and put up a little fight.

Photo, please, of how your coin holder can be used. Can't fit the console safe with it in place in my '17 so if I'm doing something wrong I'd appreciate knowing the correct procedure.

My last one put up a successful fight at a Ford dealer a few years ago (my '07). Sprung the lid but it didn't open. Was repairable. Didn't confront the dealer but never did business with him again.

I know people who would be into that safe in a flash one way or another. Failing a quick grab they would take the whole vehicle. This whole deal is dumb!
