I just got this 97 expedition and the exhaust was taken off so I put it back on and started it up, it idled high for a couple seconds then real real low for awhile before it just shut off. Any ideas of what it could be and how I can check it? Could the converters be bad or could it be fuel filter or pump when it shuts off I hear something on top of intake making a noise and not sure if it should be. it sounds like somthing running for like 10 seconds then shuts down this is after key is off and out of truck, maybe something to do with fuel. Oh, while truck is running for that little bit of time I tried to give gas but nothing happens. Fuel pump or filter is what I'm thinking. The truck seemed like it ran better when the guy started it with just straight manifold but I don't know if he cut it off or if it shut off on its own. I don't know if bad converters will make it do this or what. I really need to get this truck running so we have something else to drive. I can't keep driving the stang with these ET streets on it, its my weekend car.

I can't seem to get it off and don't fill any cracks or holes. Could it be anything else?

Ok the hose is good I took it off and checked it. What else do I need to check?

Was it just a slowly dropping rpm until it turned off or did it rattle a little bit then drop and so on.. Can you restart it? If you can't then check your fuel pump fuse(should be under the hood but check your manual).

I don't have a manual to check and it restarts and does same thing. I now backfires when I start it. The exhaust is cut off before the muffler and can't fix that until I can get it running and to exhaust shop. Can someone find out what fuse it is for me, but I'm thinking its the filter or pump itself then again it could be anything.

Oh, the guy that I got this from started it with straight manifold and it seemed to run but he cut it off before it got hot and burn a valve. You think the converters are bad and could make it not run?

Does anyone know where the fuel pump relay/fuse is located and what else should I check? I got a fuel filter and going to try to put it in today if I'll be able to find it, I haven't really looked for it, but sure it shouldn't be a problem. I just need to get this think running so keep giving me ideas on what to check. Thanks

If I keep patting the throttle it stays running but rough and smokes bad and cuts off once I let off the throttle. Any ideas? When I do hit the throttle it doesn't seem like it wants to take the gas and wants to stall out so I hit let off I hit again and let off over and over real fast.

Changed the fuel filter last night and started truck up today and it stayed running and took the gas a little better but I don't have 1 oxygen sensor up front hooked up, exhaust cut off in front of muffler from the guy we got truck from, and exhaust leak at manifold. Can't tell how good truck running and what else needs to be done if anything because of exhaust and being loud.

Ok I just moved the truck, it stayed running while in gear but if you give it gas, it won't take it and seems to want to cut off. What could the problem be?

Under the hood fuse box-- position #19-(top left)- fuel pump fuse -20 amp. Fuel pump relay, position #4 (right side, 3rd from top).

If the truck runs and will restart, I doubt that it is the fuel pump, relay, or fuse.

Check the pcv valve and hose and elbow that goes to the Idle air control valve. the elbow is notorious for cracking or getting holes in it which will cause vaccum problems---rough idle, tough starts etc.

Disconnect the exhaust and see if it runs any better. The Cats may be clogged and that could be the problem.

Check the spark plugs and the coils. These trucks have all kinds of issues with that.

I'll reply again if I think of anything else.......

It pops or backfires sometimes when I start it. It runs but when I try to give it gas, it won't take it and I checked that vacuum hose and its nothing wrong with that. Its got to be getting fuel up there because it starts and runs, but runs like crap. How about the IAC valve, could that cause my problems? Where's a cheap place to get the mid pipe with converters? Thanks for the info

Ok, I hear it popping through the intake when giving it gas, what causes that? Could timing be off or something to do with the valves?

Could be....... But it sounds like it may have run fine before you connected the exhaust. My bet is that the cats are plugged.

I was just checking prices on cats on Summitracing.com and saw some magnaflow ones for around $80 a piece.

Put the code scanner on truck and said nothing was wrong with it and the guy that came over with the scanner said he thinks its timing or bad valve cause it pops thru intake.

it was to loud and I don't know if it would take the gas with the exhaust off because the guy just started it and let run for a few seconds without hitting the throttle. I don't want to hurt anything by running it with no exhaust if it already isn't hurt from the guy we got it from.

Took plugs out and most were covered in gas. The truck wouldn't take the gas when I tried hitting the throttle and would pop thru intake and would want to shut off unless I kept hitting throttle fast

Will bad injectors make truck not run but yet make plugs wet with gas? I know it'll make truck not run right, but will plugs be covered in gas or what? I need to get truck running soon, real soon.
