Take a look at tranny fluid; it should be almost transparent red. If it is darkish red the clutch (black in color made of carbon fiber) plates in the tranny are shot. Really you need to be a seasoned mechanic to tell the extent of the damage. This would cause the symptoms you are describing...
WD40 was made just for this problem by NASA. It stands for water displacement on the 40th try. Keep a large can of WD40 in your truck. Next time you have this problem (if you do not have a engine scanner) start disconnecting electronic connections (IE all of your sensors) and spray them down...
You have to be careful doing this. I brought my wife’s 01 Escape to the dealership to have a new key I bought from them programmed and they erased my only key. So I had 2 keys that would go into the ignition but neither of them would start the truck. I am not sure how they fix the problem...

just had my tranny rebuilt, it is a 04 exp 2wd with 50k miles. the tranny was slipping in higher gears. I bought it used, the ford dealership were i got it repaired sayed it was from driving with a heavy foot. You do not want to wait too long before having it looked at, the longer you wait...
How many miles are you all getting before having to do your brakes?? My 04 Expy only has 50k and the all of the brakes pads had to be replaced. I just bought this truck and most of my driving is on the highway. My wifes 01 Ecsape has 120k and it on its 2 set of brake pads.
the switch on the door jam for the door with the issue may have been switch out for a normely opened (NO) contact instead of a normaly closed (NC) contact. on some contacts you can change them to NC or NO by swithing a wire.
