Hello, just a general question about key transponders. Do all new Ford Expeditions have transponders in the keys? Or do they only come with the separate alarm add-on?

My 2007 Expedition XLT is a previous Enterprise rental and I bought it with only one key. It has remote keyless entry, but as far as I know, no alarm. I was looking for keys and and found that if my vehicle came with transponders and I only have one key, then I need to go to the dealer to get a replacement key. Is that true?

Thanks.

Yea, pretty much. The transponders on the keys are for the PATS system. I doesn't necessarily mean you have an alarm. I don't have an alarm, and I have a "big headed" key (03 Expy). So does my dad's 04 F150, and my sis' 99 Mustang. None of them have alarms, but they have the PATS keys. I think even the first gen Expys had them, but I'm not sure.

It really is kinnda a PITA because Wal-Mart won't make a copy for you if you have a PATS key. My sis only has one key, and she locked her keys inside. A spare key would have been nice to just open the door.

Yea, you can get them at the dealer. I've heard 200 for them (or is that for the keyless entry?) I don't know why, but I could have sworn Home Depot had a sign up saying something about them copying keys with transponders in them.

i have a 97 with the pats and i found keys on ebay for $12.00 a piece and i bought 2 so i have a total of 4 keys. My local locksmith cut the keys for me. They even have the ford logo on them, unlike the ones my locksmith would have sold me and they work great like stock blanks.

1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder.

2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.

3. Remove the existing key and, within 15 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to ON (RUN).

4. The security light will light up for two seconds to indicate success in programming the key into the vehicle.

5. Don't attempt to start the vehicle with any key for at least 1 minute.
(from ford f150.net)

I don't know if will work with yours but it worked for mine.

It seems the newer cars need two keys to program a 3rd key?

you can program the key by yourself if you have 2 working key , if you have only 1 working key , you need to have the dealer or locksmith to activate the second

I bought two transponder keys and had one cut to match my Expedition. As expected it turned the ignition, but would not start the truck.

Put factory key 1 in the ignition and turn on and immediately off. Turn off and repeat within 5 second with factory key 2. On/off.

Repeat within 10 seconds with new unprogrammed key, leave on for a second and turn off. Start the truck.

Gotta make a 3d key for my daughter's Explorer.

Local hardware store. Cost me a buck. Plus 7¢ sales tax.

The store owner said "You know this won't work, don't you? It needs to have the chip programmed by the dealer." I told him that with both keys anyone could do it. Took a minute.

You have to be careful doing this. I brought my wife’s 01 Escape to the dealership to have a new key I bought from them programmed and they erased my only key. So I had 2 keys that would go into the ignition but neither of them would start the truck. I am not sure how they fix the problem, but they ended up given me a rental car overnight why they figured it out. They also told me that for that truck (01 Escape) you could only have 2 keys programmed at one time. If you programmed a new key it would make the first key programmed invalid.... never tried programming a 3rd key. It cost my $150.00 for the key and programming from the dealership.

I used no care -- other than following the instructions to the letter! -- and the 3d key programmed itself.

Add Duplicate Key for 1998 and up Ford vehicles (Requires two working keys)
1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.
3. Remove the existing key and, within five seconds, insert a second key and turn it to ON (RUN) then back OFF.
4. Insert the new key before ten seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it on for one second and turn back to OFF.
5. The security light will light up for three seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed

My $9.99 ebay key worked fine, even though the locksmith couldn't imagine it working and Ford flat out denied that anything short of their taking my $120 would do the trick.
Small victory!
