Speedo wasn't working, new GEM solved
This is just for anyone else who searches for speedo issues. Mine would work about 15% of the time. It would never work for more than a day, and would often go in and out while driving. Like it would start working, read 60, then drop down to 40, then jump back up to 60, then fall to 50, then...- Doonze

4x4 woes (imagine that)
Installed the new GEM. 4x4 acting exactly the same. It DID fix my speedo that was only working about 15% of the time. So at least there's that. So new switch, new GEM, new shift motor. Still, only get 4x4 to work 5-10% of the time. In fact, nothing has changed at all since I started working on...- Doonze

GEM Module?!
I just replaced my GEM. It didn't fix the issue I was hoping, but it did fix my speedo that only worked about 15% of the time. It really wasn't that hard honestly. 4 bolts holding the fuse box in. Two bolts holding on the two big wiring harnesses. Space is tight, but it's doable. Took me 30 mins...- Doonze

This is mostly me talking to myself, but maybe it will help someone else down the road? So I do have some new info. Same symptoms, 4x4 lights (and hence 4WD) will not come on when the switch is turned most of the time. Less than 10% of the time's I try. Right by my house is tons of deep loose...- Doonze

Parking brake adjustment... tricks?
Oh, I have them and use them! But it's the "getting out of the vehicle to put them in place" part that I don't like. Just so much to trust to a parking pawl. And I often work alone. Then your locked against the pawl with all that weight. I've broke a few shifters just because of this! But oh...- Doonze

Parking brake adjustment... tricks?
Not what I wanted to hear. I live in the hills, and not having a parking brake is hard on the ol parking pawl. Especially with a trailer, I want something more than a pawl holding all that weight. Sigh.... Anyone have a parking brake that WORKS!!- Doonze

So my parking brake has never really worked. Fully engaged it would still roll in R or D. And not hold on a hill. I just did a full brake job and took a look at them. Seemed to have some meat left. I still ordered a new pair from LPS, when they came in I took a look and they had no more meat on...- Doonze

I went ahead and replaced my shift motor. Didn't help. It WILL go into 4x4 every blue moon. Once in 10 - 20 times of trying. (on different days, so like once a month) but most of the time it won't do it again. I OHM'd out my switch, and all 4 positions did get different readings, but my meter...- Doonze

In other news, today the 4WD decided to work again. I now get clicks coming from behind the switch, and the first time I got a clunk. Not nearly as loud as the clunks I got on my test drive, but a reassuring clunk none the less. One you could feel. I like clunks, makes me sure something is...- Doonze

Bob, good call out! But yes I was parked, and tried in natural as well. On top of that, you can change to A4WD and 4H at any speed up to 55 mph. (So says the almighty manual at least). This fact is what leads me to believe my wacky speedo might be a contributing factor here. I would SUSPECT the...- Doonze

Crazy speedo!
So, my speedo works when it wants to. Often coming and going from moment to moment. Sometimes it doesn't even make it to 0 before it kicks back in. Sometimes it doesn't work for 10-20 mins, sometimes it works for hours. The OD also doesn't work at all, I haven't pulled the dash, but I'm sure...- Doonze

Where did you get them? How much? Are they power? My mirrors are shot in my new to me 97, and I'm thinkin of going tow mirrors as I plan on this being a towing rig.- Doonze

So, been going through my new to me 1997. When I test drove it 3 days ago, it went into 4H and 4L just fine. Could hear the motor, felt the clunk. Lights responded accordingly. I wasn't 100% sure the fronts engaged, but I couldn't get the tires to spin on gravel so I was thinking it was...- Doonze
