Before you proceed with the new engine idea, just make sure your tranny is up to par as well. One of the reasons I let mine go after the engine blew, was that earlier I found metal shavings (some were big) on the tranny pan while doing a tranny fluid flush!

I would start by checking for vacuum leaks especially around the EVAP system. Then check that the intake throttle body and EGR are functioning properly before throwing parts at it! It seems that you may have EGR orifices plugged and in need of cleaning. There's a few videos posted on YouTube...

My wife loved driving her around. If she was in better condition I would have tried reviving her. But the shavings found in the tranny did for me. Too much of a risk plus all the other stuff added to that equals too much investment.
