    inconvenience or safety feature?

    I had this happening too. There’s a feature called auto-hold that will do this on level surfaces as well. I don’t remember if it did all the time or only when shifting from Park to Drive, but it was annoying either way. There’s a setting in the menus to turn it off.

    I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that most people want easy access to their phones while they are driving is because a) it’s convenient for them, b) they don’t think they are being unsafe, and c) they don’t care about a violation because most states don’t aggressively enforce it...
