Go back to the shop with the AC machine. Tell them you bought all the parts and have second thoughts about doing the job yourself. They may do the job for the labor and new refrigerant. A Expedition has rear AC and almost 4lbs of refrigerant. My compressor went. The shop was able to save 2.8lbs. This stuff is not cheap. Oil has to be added also. The shop that did mine gave me a 90 day warranty and 1yr on the compressor. You may go through all this work and it could fail. Then you will be back at the same same shop, with an empty wallet. Sometimes in life, you have to pay the freight.

Refrigerant isn’t expensive at all… It’s come down a lot in recent years.

I saved several hundred dollars doing it myself, even more if you consider all the parts I didn’t replace. 13 months on I’m happy I didn’t pay shop for work I was capable of doing.

I wrote this over tired last night before going to bed, and is a bit more confrontational than it should've been.

I had the same attitude until my compressor failed because of how particular these systems are to contamination and minor leaks. Completely agree with the merits of having a shop do the work, but a lot of shade tree mechanics have successfully done this is long as they pay attention to detail and follow proper steps. It's an easy job to screw up, but not rocket science either.

As of now, I'm planning to give this a shot myself. I'm not 100% there but definitely leaning in that direction. If I screw it up, it's totally on me - and I'm okay with that.

Please know that this Expedition forum has been very helpful to me. Perhaps the most challenging aspect of this job is removal of the compressor itself. If I close the remaining gap of doubt/uncertainty I have now and decide to move forward doing the job myself, I'll document the lessons learned and share them with the forum.

As much as I wanted to do this myself, I simply don't have time. I took it in to my local shop, quoted repair at $1145
