Air conditioning

I have a 2017 Expedition EL Limited. Had it to the dealership for an air conditioner recharge. The assessment was I have a leak in the compressor and the evaporator. The cost to fix is $5,400.00. Any thoughts if this is a fair price or what would be reasonable. Thanks

Do you have any other repair shops in your area that you can take it to ? The dealerships have a lot of overhead expenses that require them to charge higher than reasonable rates.

Based on my experience with a Ford Freestyle we used to own that incurred two A/C compressor replacements before I figured out there was a $8 scroll valve that kept getting clogged, the compressor is probably a $1200-$1300 job. I imagine the majority of the costs in that estimate would be the evaporator which probably requires a considerable amount of deconstruction of the dash/center console but even then, that estimate seems high. This site suggests $1000 - $1254.

I just traded my 2016 el and was bummed with the value. Dealer gave me $14k, so the $5k quoted repair price is roughly a 3rd of what the vehicle is worth. If you decide to fix, make sure you replace the blend door actuators while the dash is deconstructed. I got a quote for 2400 to replace the driver side actuator. I cut my losses.
