Rebuild Top End or New Engine 183,000

obviously a lot of people hate the 5.4... just like many people hate every engine ever made. the 5.4 is not a boat anchor, nor is it the worst engine ever made. It's a damn good motor with excellent reliability, with some models having specific issues with spark plugs and the valve train (cam...

Cut the Bumper or Get a Lift--Advice Needed

scotthear is correct. if you're not going offroad, you don't need taller tires to increase ground clearance.

Upper Control Arm Bushings / HD Control Arm?

the 04 (first year of the 2nd Gen) has 8,9" ground clearance. I would not call that a "ton of ground clearance". what size KO2's are you running? without lift, a 34" inch tire is about all that fits before you have to start trimming the wheel well, etc. a 34" tire only gets you to almost ten...

    2018 Engine Replaced

add on turbos, even OEM turbos that are added to engines that were not originally designed with turbos, can quickly wear out an engine. there's a reason diesel engines seem to be relatively unaffected by turbos.

    2018 Engine Replaced

mercedes is a brand with historically high quality that has gone into the crapper in the last few years. they might be doing better, but not consistently.

“Premature” Control Arm Failure with 3/2 ReadyLift?

yes, far too soon. lift affects the working angles for suspension and drivetrain, and can easily exceed the built in tolerance of OEM suspensions and drive trains, leading to greatly increased wear. any new such components must take into consideration the change in those working angles, or the...

    2018 Engine Replaced

yes, all vehicles have problems. the question is: how do maintenance and repair costs compare? I don't believe a bar chart that shows historically POS brands doing better than historically high quality brands. I'd have to see more about how jeep, et al, turned their historically bad quality...

    Cargo Management

some considerations for your external storage: waterproofing - rain will get into everything outside. theft-proofing. people will steal anything and everything they can get to. ground clearance when backing up (consider one of the pivot racks) hatch clearance when opening - you don't want to...

    Tires, tires, tires

year, model, etc.? absolutely yes on the ratio. generally, lifts should be in the 3" range, but can be model specific.

Can I install a third row seat?

no, still intend to do that. I'm old and in poor health, so much work gets put in the "eventually" pile. At some point, I may just let my mechanic handle it.

    A Dying Breed

I didn't buy my Expy for daily driving, though that is what I use it for. If that was my goal, I would have a bought a toy tacoma, or some such. I bought a used former fire truck (police package) 4x4 SUV because I want to be prepared. Being prepared comes at a price.

I'm trying to post a pic out of my media gallery in my profile, but apparently I know nothing. oh. that's how I do it. It only took 4 or 5 edits before I got it. anyway, by the end of summer, it'll have a tuner in it, and hopefully shorty headers as well. before those ancient tires completely...

welcome! I bought an 04 thirteen months ago. I could not be happier. mine was a fire truck (police package), under 100k miles in showroom condition. it did need some work; the fire department wore out the electronics, but they did take good care of it.

    Can I tow this?

No, it is not "way overkill". the proper answer to this starts with a lawyer from the insurance company. If you think the problem is limited to "power" then you do not know what you are talking about. Sorry to be harsh, but your attitude is dangerous and can get people killed.

    Expy for off-roading?

Ft Irwin is almost due north of Barstow, between Barstow and Death Valley. It's the base where General Patton trained the army during world war II before the invasion of Africa. so Barstow is to the south, Death Valley is to the north, and the Goldstone antenna array is west (this is the line of...

I have to agree. If this only happens when towing, then the tow config must be looked at; either the wdh or the load balance itself.

me, personally, I'd get the tranny. Now, having said that, I'd want to get the motor rebuilt with all available upgrades (at least spark plugs, cam chain system, oil pump, etc.), $$$ permitting, so it might be best to do a price comparison between that and some version of a crate engine...
