    I had the same problem on my 03 5.4 ... My issue end up being a Mass air flow meter. I replaced it and so far no problem.

    I was tOld by a friend/ ford mechanic that my fuel pump was getting bad. So I went to ford and bought a new one. It didn't change any of the starting issues.

    You should hear of the problems I had with my 2004 Mustang GT,Tranny went out, 4 coils went out, MAF went bad, Rear axle bearing and abs light wont go away. Dealer cant figure out the ABS. but for some reason I still own it.. I love it !!! LOL

    Check valve ? where is that located? Would a check valve cause this starting issue? Also if the relay were defective would that cause the hard start issue???

    I had the same problem with my 2003 XLT, I was 700 miles from home and couldnt get it started. I ran it for code and received a code the Mass Air flow sensor.. I swapped it out and Im running again.

    well I tried everything in post 3, NADA... Come to find out its the Hazard Switch/ Multi Function switch.. I wiggled the hazzard button and wham! the brake lights worked!!!!

    Im experiencing a similar problem.. Turn signals work, Upper brake light is working just not the 2 lights, Driver and Pass not working... Bulbs are good.. They were working... Only thing I did was change out the Positive Battery terminal last night, due to the old one being a lil loose..
