My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Sorry for not jumping on here sooner! I ended up putting all the videos together in an easier to follow way on my youtube channel. You can see it here Hope you figure out how to get that cover off. Sounds like you missed the dipstick bolt like PitDexion said.

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Great news, the truck is all back together and running great! If anyone else finds this thread and wants an idea what they are up for here is some details It took me 2 full days worth of time to do this job I have average to above average mechanical skill I have above average stubbornness...

    Greetings from Canada

Actually in the winter white vehicles tend to turn a dark brown. So they are still pretty visible. My wife will be driving this one if it ever gets running again. She tends to wash her vehicles a lot more than me though, so I suppose there is a chance we could lose it in the parking lot in a...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

If you do it before the guides break you could save an easy 3 hours of fighting with the oil pan

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Ours is a 2010, there is tons of room to do everything. The hardest part has been getting the oil pan off. I wasn't able to drop the front diff as far as it needed to go. So it took a lot of pulling pushing and smashing to get it out, and then back in again. Now I'm on the home stretch. Just...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Update: Got all the new parts on today. Also finally got the oil pan off and got to see the surprises in there That looks like it's the rest of the missing timing guides. Also found some pieces of junk in the driver side VCT solenoid Glad I decided to pull the oil pan. The filter screen...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Great news! All the parts arrived today. Bad news is I won't have enough time to put it all back together today. My plan this evening is to get the new parts installed. Bar the engine over to be sure I didn't screw up the timing Then tomorrow after work see how quickly I can put it all back...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

I would have to check, but I think it's somewhere around $500. I didn't buy genuine Ford parts.

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Absolutely. I'm putting all new everything in there. Gonna skip the water pump since I can do it anytime pretty easily without touching all this timing stuff.

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Update on the engine, Got the timing chain cover off to find that both chain guides are missing Found pieces in parts of the oil pump I didn't have all the peices there so I had to pull the oil pan off. Found the rest of it stuck in the oil pan, other parts stuck in the pickup tube which...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

I know what you mean. I still go to the local mom and pop parts shop. Their prices are better than everyone else in town, and they do give me a discount for being on a local dad's Facebook group. So we get the same price as the dealer discounts. Nobody else in town touches their prices, and...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Actually my local parts supplier can get me pretty much everything the same day (if I call before 8), or by the next day The problem is the cost is 2-10 times more from them. So I'll wait for shipping online, and save my money

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Update, I opened it up to install the phaser bypass. The passenger side cam chain is extremely loose. Normally it should be tight. I am suspecting there is a leaky tensioner on that side so I have continued tearing the front cover off Found a little surprise though, my harmonic balancer on...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Runs good. Supposedly they loose a little top end power, but you could not prove it by me. That's a quote from a guy that installed the phaser bypass and did not do the tune. Just added the shims and drove it. Seems to me that the bypass does not leave it down on power Note that the bypass...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

I'll see if one of my scanners will let me pull up the graphs for those. The video I posted already shows the timing graph. Which is all over the place when it's acting up.

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

I bought it used 4 days ago. Your probably right. But it has 288,000 km which seems about good for the service life of the VCT.

    Greetings from Canada

New member here. I have been avoiding ford's my whole life. My sister has always told me how much she loved her expedition. I came across a good deal on one and my wife seemed to like it, so we bought it Now I'm having problems with it (seems like VCT solenoid check my other thread) so I...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

I had another look and I think you're right. The earlier years seemed to have a bigger hole. So, if I'm pulling the valve covers anyway then I hate to break it to you guys, but the phaser bypass kit will be getting installed rather than new solenoids. I planned to do my own custom tune on the...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

I have been watching all his videos too. The phaser bypass kit I bought has the timing chain lock so the front cover doesn't need to come off, but, I'm planning on doing the solenoids through the hole that they poke out of. Seems like less hassle than trying to pull the vc. Truth be told I...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Thanks for the laugh. I flip flop between being a hack, and wanting to do it right. Im not sure where I sit on this currently. But for now I am leaning towards putting in new solenoids and see what happens. Thanks everyone for the prompt feedback. I was hoping with all the videos someone...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

I have the phaser bypass kit coming in the mail already. But I see I can get new solenoids pretty cheap, and saw a guy swap them without pulling the Valve Cover. So it may be worth a shot. Then Ill slate the Phaser bypass for another time if they still sound bad.

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Thanks jexpedition07, that explains a lot So, with the results of my test, and looking at that other video for diagnosing the VCT, would we conclude that one or both of the solenoids are bad? And, if that's the case, I still think locking the phasers is the answer as nobody seems to have bad...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

So, I decided to test the VCT solenoids. This test starts with both VCT solenoids connected. When I put it in gear, hold one foot on the brake and lightly bring the rpm up you can hear the engine start clunking and clattering. Unplugging the driver side VCT only, and perform the same test...

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

Good call I'm going to see if my local Canadian tire rents oil pressure tools out or if I need to buy one.

My 2010 sounds like an actual diesel at idle

This is the diagnostic feedback using VCM Scanner from HPTuners while the engine sounds like a diesel. I stab the throttle (in gear) then slam the brakes hard while parked on a hill which will start the timing to flail widly, and fuel trim to go berzerk. While that is happening the engine...
