I ran the 87 performance tow tune on my F150 with the 5.4 motor and 6 speed transmission. It was a HUGE difference in drivability. Better throttle response, faster shifts, better towing performance, etc. You can and should run their ODLK version, which is overdrive lockout. That was the primary...
BTW, what kind of budget are you shooting for? That will help narrow down a mileage target. In my book if you're picking a tow vehicle, the newer, lower miles the better even if you have to sacrifice that moonroof or power running boards to do it.
Travel trailers are a slippery slope, a 4k pound trailer is a gateway trailer. You will soon want that big slide out or more room to stretch and you need a tow vehicle that can grow with you. Shoot for 08+ if budget permits, most of the 5.4 kinks were worked out by that point. Look for 3.73...
Yup, between the lack of towing power and that stupid rear seat setup for kids only, those were big deal breakers on the suburban. Now if I could have had a 6.2L Yukon XL, I would have tolerated the lousy third row option.
Need to let all those F150 owners out there know about this. My understanding was Ford used a version of the amp steps but modified just slightly enough to be unique to ford. Maybe it's different for the expedition power boards, which would make sense since amp doesn't make a power board for...
Nope, pretty sure I've got that right. Understeer is when you "push" your front tires, like driving on ice, but the car doesn't follow where you point the wheels (this is an extreme example of course). Most cars are slightly biased to oversteer. Not a lot, but when pushed you'd rather the...
+1 for the power liftgate. My wife loves that she never has to touch the backside of the car as it's usually dirty. Now if only Ford had thought to put a lip on the inside floor so that things don't roll out when you open the liftgate. A gallon of milk pulled that escape trick last week and...
The hellwig is your best bet, it is a thicker bar than what is installed stock. They put those thin bars on to bias the vehicle for oversteer. I guess they figure better to spin out than understeer and hit what you're trying to avoid. I put an upgraded (steeda) rear sway bar on my focus...
The scary thing about the blind spot system is that it still reccomended you visually check before changing lanes. What's the point of that? At least with the built in blindspot mirrors you can trust what you see (I still turn and look regardless). I tell my wife if you see anything in that...
That looks like it is only 2 point friction sway could control since the chains only help distribute weight but provide no sway control. The pivots at the hitch head give you friction sway control provided you load them with enough weight on the bars. An equalizer or husky centerline (what I'm...
Did the shift lever come out as part of this process? I've thought aniut finding the chrome trimmed shifter from a platinum or limited and swapping it with my bland black plastic shifter. I'd do the steering wheel at the same time, I love the wood insert at the top of the wheel like my platinum...
The coil packs sit down in recesses in the valve cover so they cannot be rotated, must be pulled straight up which is the problem. I put stock plugs back in, the gap on the ones I removed were nearly identical to the new ones (pre gapped to .030). I didn't notice a difference in power and was...
What a PITA! 34k miles on my 17 EL. I'm running a 5* performance/tow tune (87 octane), so decided to change out my plugs for a good baseline since I just bought the truck certified pre owned last month. I watched the YouTube videos to make sure there weren't any gotchas, seemed pretty...
You can only get heated rear seats on limited and platinum trims. The 202a is heated and cooled front seats only, with rear hvac and radio controls on the back of the center console. I unbolted the center section of the 3 piece middle row to create Captains chairs. You could add heat pads to the...
Sounds like you either have the hitch to high, not enough weight on your bars to push weight to the front axles or trailer lower in back than front. My 17 EL tows my 26ft ultralight trailer pretty well once I got the hitch height set correctly and enough weight on my bars. I use a 4 point...
Yup, a similarly equipped suburban compared to my 17 EL with 202a would have been 10-15k more, and wouldn't tow as well as the ecoboost either (suburban with the 5.3L)
Find an xlt with the 202a package. That includes heated/cooled leather seats, sync 3,hd tow package with brake controller, backup cam, backup sensors, Sony sound system, power lift gate and remote start. I have a 17 EL XLT with this setup and my wife loves it.
The limited gets you power steps...
Oh and as a lazy alternative, unplug the vacuum solenoid on the firewall and let the front hubs lock in. As long as you are not in 4x4 it will not hurt the truck but might get slightly less mpg. This is essentially what happens when you go into 4a mode.
Pull the vacuum line down at the hub and use a vacuum pump Guage to draw vacuum. Let it sit for an hour and see if it leaks down and if so, you have a leak. There are a few one way check valves in the lines as well that keep the vacuum held when engine vacuum decreases. You can pull them and...
The limited 4x4 models from I think 08 onward had the integrated controller and I also think that means it has 3.73 gears. Again, these were standard in the limited trim models and optional on xlt.
I'm going to try 3/8" OD, the F150 and F250 guys have had success with this side. Otherwise the entire window seal has to be replaced and they're not cheap. It's not unbearably loud but noticeable where it shouldn't be.
What size surgical tubing do I need for the front window seals? Dealer tells me wind noise is normal, I do not agree. This is on a 17 Expedition. I will be putting the surgical tubing up into the window seal trim at the top of the door as it sounds like the front windows are not fully closed...
If they can get production numbers up on the new 18s, it might start to even out, it's just a really big gap to try and close in half a production year.
Ford screwed up by not changing the external design and powertrain options for soo long, then people got bored with it. Fact is it has more...
