I know this has been discussed a number of times. I even found most of the information here on how to do it on the 2003-2006 Expy that didn't have them standard. I have to remove my door cards for many reasons,
like doors that don't latch in the cold weather until you hit the electric door lock...
'97 XLT with 220k. No issues. Always used a little oil (syn).
Only thing ever replaced were bad cops and an alternator.
Body and transmission were going, so replaced with
'05 XLT, currently with 67k. Engine fine with same rate (slight)
oil consumption. Same problem of rusted radiator...
Going to change my IWE's and solenoid. Truck's been pushing the whole front end in 2WD. Can any metal swarf from IWE gears get in the hubs, which I think are sealed units, and CV axles until I can do this?
Aside from the fact that they would be a PITA to install on both 2nd and 3rd gen, and would show little if any performance gain, what other reasons for recommending not using them?
I want them on my 2nd gen ('05) because of bad experience with my old '97. I keep my stuff long. So, the cast...
This thread seems to have died. Maybe cause I hijacked it :-)
Could there be stronger window motors to upgrade with?
I'm gonna pull the door panels anyway. This thing freezes up in our single digit temperatures and I have to hit the door lock buttons up and down 10-15 times just to get the...

I'm not using truck for heavy wheeling. But, yes, it's probably a false economy not to beef up with stronger axles as long as its apart. It's
the IRS, though, so not sure of availability. I think the rear is similar to the front in that it's the front drive CV technology. I will go for new...
That is a wealth of information. Found out that I DO have a 9.75 like my old '97 and not the 8, even though IRS. Just not LSD. The 9.75 is on all the '05's - 5.4 engine. They can be identified by having 12 bolts and a more asymmetrical shape than the 8.8, which has 10 bolts and typically found...
Compared to my old '97, this '05 that I got just plain sucks in the snow.
I know it's mainly because this newer one doesn't have LSD and I'm really missing that. Probably have to wait til the warm weather, but I'd really like to put a Tru Trac in it rather than the OEM clutch type.
Trouble is...
Depends on your priorities. I've had both Expeditions and put over 220k miles on the first gen 2 valve 5.4. That engine had only 230 HP but towed a boat and all kinds of trailers. The engine always had a strange intermittent ticking and burned a little oil. I always serviced my own plugs, so...
Mine's an '05 that I got a little over a year ago with only 46k on it.
it's the red with gun metal grey lower cladding that I want to keep that way. I've had my eye on those F150 20 inch since I got it but didn't know they came in that gunmetal finish. I'm waiting for a used set to come along...
Same here. And ditto with 1rst gen. Don't mean to hijack thread, but compared to my 1rst year, 1rst gen, there are lots of nagging little problems with my '05. The engineering they put into the 3V 2nd is impressive, but it seems that shortcuts were taken compared to when they first came out...
On my '97 Expy, my ABS light stayed on towards the end of that truck's
life. I just pulled the fuse and continued motoring on with functioning brakes. Just no ABS and some black tape on the dash over the light.
On the '05 I have now, it's happening again. Except I have only 60K
miles on it...
My wiper doesn't work because the bearing/post assembly that the wiper arm
attaches to has seized. I will have to replace that as it is a common problem
with second gen. My first gen had a different system that contained the whole wiper mechanism in the metal part of the lift gate. It never...
I was disappointed in finding rotted out radiator supports on my otherwise mint and solid '05. This is, after all, upstate NY with
crappy winters so I'm not surprised. I think PO had garaged the truck
most of the time so it could be worse. I'm pretty sure these radiator supports have been...
Welcome, PAcountryBOY. Me too. Wish I can help, but ran into the same problem. While a forced air system is a distant dream for me, I can't see a cold air snorkel system like the 1rst gens use when our air cleaner is right on top almost like the old days where a hood scoop or cowl induction hood...
There wouldn't be much to cover if your 3rd row was up, if I'm getting what you mean. I was thinking of using my old cargo shade out of an '84 Z28 I once had.
That covered a large area under that big glass tail hatch of the Camaro, which is probably close to that of the rear cargo area with...
It's true that the front wheels should be free wheelin' without being connected to the halfshafts and front diff. Just like those manual hubs of old 4x4's, which these IWE's replace.
After the Alldata you posted explains the solenoid, it does say that when vacuum is applied in 2WD mode, the...
Applying vacuum to the actuators independent of the truck's vacuum system and solenoid doesn't disengage the wheel from the driveline. Am I missing something or isn't that the basic test of the IWE's themselves? If just the solenoid, that would be great.
Also, I've been reading that once this...
Well I checked the IWE's as per this very helpful You Tube:Ford IWE system - YouTube
Up to 30 i/p on the vacuum gauge and the wheels wouldn't disengage from the drivetrain. So I guess I've been running around the last 14K miles with all that stuff turning and wasting gas. With the vacuum line...
That's just it. There are no ripped CV boots and my experience with worn CV's
is that they make a clicking noise. I'm going to check the IWE's now, and rotate
the tires. I just hope it ain't rear bearing noise that sounds like it's coming from the front or worse, that the new Timkens are...
