Fair enough. I agree that the Expedition (EL, no less) is the wrong tool for hardcore off-roading. My old lifted 4-Runner got around much easier, to more difficult destinations. But my priorities have changed. I need to be able to tow a travel trailer long distances reliably to remote...
Here's the damage that was done...
Bent my skidplate on the driver's side... I imagine I would have damaged some important stuff had the skidplate not been there.
Another angle showing the bend in the driver's side (near) of the skidplate, compared to the straighter passenger side (far)...
"The New Wave" - Poor man's version of The Wave, near Page, AZ. 36°56'12.4"N 111°30'05.5"W Definitely worth a visit if you're driving through Page. :) We skipped Antelope Canyon ($200-300 for an hour guided tour, family of 4) in favor of this on the way to Zion Canyon from Grand Canyon. Lots of...
@Black - The short sidewalls definitely don't help. I opted for 20's + shorter sidewalls for both appearance and towing stability.
Thanks for the skid plate write-up. i've been looking for a solution for that section of the underbelly. Any ideas on the cross-members? At least somehow creating a...
@ExplorerTom, @powerboatr The EL is definitely a BUS and not great for hard-core off-roading. It's just too long for hard-core off-roading, but I wanted to see what it could do since I was at this event/venue. What's most frustrating with the break-over angle is the 2 cross-members that hang...
I spent a couple hours at the Hungry Valley 4x4 Training Area surrounded by about 200 friends in Toyotas (which I love) trying to keep up. #OffRoadAndChill2019 sponsored by RPM Garage in Monrovia, CA. Videos are from a friend's cell phone so not the best quality.
These are the concrete "steps"...
Thanks. I'm pretty sure we could get Bushwacker flares for the F150 to fit (with some cutting). But I'm not a fan of the exposed fasteners look. I'm looking for the simplest/cleanest design that will allow me to open up the fender about 1-2 inches to allow for larger tires 35"-37" without having...
We don't get a lot of snow in Southern California. I have chains for my Subaru. The tires on the Expedition - Nitto Exo Grappler - are snow rated (3 peak mountain snow flake) and I've never needed chains - really haven't been in deep snow. But for heavy/deep snow, chains would fit this tire...
@Black or others... Would you happen to know if spring spacers for our 3rd gens are interchangeable front to rear? I'd like to raise my rears (on Ranchos QuickLift) a small amount. Readylift has a 1.5" "leveling kit" (front spacer). I'm trying to figure out if I can use these in the rear...
I was visually (crudely) measuring from the bottom mounting point (which are aligned in the side-by-side photo) to the top of the polished section of the piston rod (where the top spring mount would meet). But again, the longer shock body most likely cuts into uptravel, netting no more range of...
Correct, which is part of the reason I'd like to limit my lift to about 2" all around (even that seems like a lot for the UCA and CV joints). I'd prefer to retain down-travel (for better articulation) than give it up for increased up-travel as I don't do much high-speed off-roading.
Having said...
I can only assume at this point that travel is the same with 3rd gens as with 2nd gens, but I don't have a reliable source for this. The article I cited earlier is referenced from Wikipedia in the 2nd gen section of the Ford Expedition page. The 3rd gen section of the Wikipedia article simply...
For those who have done some serious high-speed off-roading, and/or those who have performed suspension measurements - I'm curious if you've a) found the limits of our Expeditions' suspension travel to get in the way of your off-road travels and/or b) have experienced notably better down-travel...
FYI - the Bilstein 6112's for the F-150 are a bit longer. Not sure if this results in more down-travel, as the Upper Control Arms are likely the limiting component. The Bilstein springs are also a tad longer. This combo is better than stock. But I do wish the struts had a bit more rebound damping.
We get especially excited here in Southern California. 1 hour drive from home up a mountain and this... pretty amazing by So Cal (Los Angeles) standards...
Adding one video of a small rock climb in Joshua Tree, CA. Berdoo Canyon Trail northbound (from Dillon Rd to Geology Tour Rd). 33.83336, -116.07304. The wheelbase and frame components hanging low below the underbelly significantly limit the breakover angle. Lots of scraping. Still, in balance...
$2500 seems pricey for a 3 year warranty. Another way to evaluate this is: Do you think there is at least a 50% chance of having $5k worth of covered repairs in the next 3 years (50% of $5k = $2500 = the cost of the warranty)... or choose your own numbers/scenarios. If not, then just take the...
@Black. I'll try the washers. I like simple + effective ideas. Thanks.
BTW, I got the Bilstein 6112's installed up front a couple months ago. Thanks for your advice. I like the height adjustability (I've got it set on 0.5" lift) and digressive valving. Steep damping curve for low-speed...
@Munkiebunz3 . Did you figure out the clunk after the installation of your skid plates? I just installed my transmission skid plate (RCI) which bumps right up against one of the exhaust hangers. I need to figure out how to get a hole cut out to make room for the exhaust to move around.
Did...
Hi @HawkX66 . Did you start this project? I'm trying to find some intel on how to do a custom body lift on my 2017 EL. I just need to know what wires, hoses, and mechanical parts (steering column?) pull when lifting the body up about 1-2 inches off the frame. Would you happen to know this? I'll...
What was your cheap high output solution? I bought cheap HIDs (Kensun 5000K). While they are whiter than regular bulbs, they are not brighter. I'd like a brighter solution, but am not yet ready to put down $150 for a premium HID kit.
Hill Descent Control is very awkward for me too. I can't seem to ever get the vehicle to descend at the speed that I want it to. The brake pedal becomes extremely sensitive due to the back-pressure on the hydraulics caused by the HDC system. Touching the brakes while in HDC causes sudden...
