flashing CEL, tow or limp home?

My 98 XLT ruptured a heater hose and washed #3 and #4 spark plugs real nice and clean. I noticed immediately when it began to misfire. Two miles up the road it set P0303 as a pending code, five miles later the check engine light came on and flashed in short bursts. I drove it ten more miles...

4.6 Windsor thermostat housing will not seal

This is actually my wife's F-150 but it's a very similar engine to the one in my Expedition. I replaced the thermostat due to it throwing P0125, indicating the stat stuck open. I got a stat and o ring from O'Reilly and installed them. It leaked like no other, so, absolutely fed up with the crap...

    Murray/O Reilly compressors just junk?

Yes on both but I can't tell you exactly how much PAG oil I put it. I can tell you it was quite a bit. I usually assume there is between 0 and 3 ounces of oil in the system and I add enough to fill it up. Residential ACs don't care if you overfill the crankcase a bit. That might explain the leak...

    Murray/O Reilly compressors just junk?

I have put two Murray compressors on my 98 Expedition last summer. The first was rebuilt and bad straight out if the box. It refused to develop high pressure or any kind of suction; in residential AC terms this is called "inefficient compressor". I changed it last June, this time springing for a...

    Acid damage to compressor?

The one it had when I got it had a leak at the shaft seal. Eventually the Napa one started leaking at the same place. The Murray one I took off struggled a bit developing pressure. There is no acid in the system. I used a QuickCheck 2000 acid test on the truck and on the recovery bottle. Both...

    Acid damage to compressor?

This is the third compressor that's gone bad in my '98 Expedition. The one that was on it was bad when I got it. I took it to a mechanic to have a new one installed; they put a NAPA Cold Power and it lasted a little over two years. I replaced it myself with a rebuilt Murray unit that lasted...

A/C System Recharge. How much oil to add?

Oh, if you are putting in that much 134a, buy a 30 pound jug of it and forget paying $25 a pound for it at O' Reilly. That's highway robbery. You can also fill it with certain gas dusters. You'd have to change the pressure switch for one out if an R12 system. I did that on an antique F-150 and...

A/C System Recharge. How much oil to add?

The best way to check for leaks is a hydrostatic test with dry nitrogen. It takes a few minutes and leaks can be pinpointed with soap and water. That said, I believe you've got a satisfactory leak test. My own Expedition also calls for 14 ounces of PAG 46. I always pull a vacuum and suck the...

    System Too Lean (Bank 1 & 2)

I had that same thing happen after a 90 mph run up I 45 ftpm Houston to Dallas. I broke the PCV tube getting the elbow off. The replacement parts cost $7. For a while I had PO401 also but it just vanished. I think some of the carbon buildup got sucked into the engine. It runs good. Had to...

    Ignition key cylinder disassembly

A while back I picked several key cylinders from various Ford trucks at the local Pull A Part. Most of them were in the LOCK position, but one wasn't. I pulled the tumblers from the one that wasn't locked and swapped it into my 98 Expedition. The one it had was wearing out to the point it...

! Wanting to swap engine with a diesel moter

Would the front suspension even hold the diesel engine up? One good speed bump and it's bye bye ball joints...

    System Too Lean (Bank 1 & 2)

This^^^. They may have ripped or disconnected a vacuum line when they were replacing the alternator. For those codes, thoroughly check your vacuum lines first. Forget the O2 sensors--those are just money makers for the parts store. They do need replaced once in a while, but not for PO171 and...

Healthy engine vacuum and DTC question

So how about the vacuum reading on a healthy engine? 18? 21? More?

Healthy engine vacuum and DTC question

Most of that stuff is now under lifetime warranty. The Check Engine light went out but the code is still set. I will watch it to see if the light comes back on and if it does, I'll clean the ports here at home. I did some research on the exhaust tube. If that's clogged I can blow the carbon back...

Healthy engine vacuum and DTC question

TL;dr What's the vacuum supposed to be on a healthy 4.6 engine. Are there any serious DTC codes the truck might throw? The old truck threw me a P0401 yesterday which I traced back to either a faulty DFPE (sp) sensor or clogged ports. I replaced the sensor last year, which cleared that code...

    Pre cut PATS I key

Where would one order a pre cut PATS I ignition key? My keys and the pins in the cylinder lock switch are worn out to the point that I have to twist half a dozen times to get the ignition key to turn. I picked up two cylinders from a junkyard today and took the sidebar out of one of the...

Voltage changes while driving - new alternator?

Replace both the alternator and the battery... and stay away from the junkyard when you buy the replacements. I know that sounds crazy and it is expensive, but you won't have to worry about it dying on you. In my experience when one goes it takes the other with it. For a while I was buying...

How to drain the torque converter?

I've looked around online and all I can find on draining out the torque converter is a video of someone flushing it by disconnecting the supply line to the transmission cooler. Honestly I thought he was gonna burn the tranny up in the process. My transmission filter evidently hadn't been...

I need some procedural advice for doing ball joints.

Don't do like I did and drive 10,000 miles with just shipping grease in the ball joints. Pump something in there! I had to do three of them over, including both lowers. That gave me an excuse to replace the front brakes, though. The most important thing (besides jackstands) is to take your time...

    After 16 years

Nice truck. Someone close by has one that color for sale. I had wanted to stop and look at it this evening, but I don't think I want to try and keep gas in TWO of these things. :)

    Who else has a 98?

I have a '98 XLT. I've decided to keep it as close to factory specs as I can, but I think the person before me installed larger tires on it. As they say, the sky is the limit. Factory options abound at the local junkyard. I have added factory fog lamps to mine and I've swapped out the CD...

    Autolamp wiring

I just got a set of factory fog lights from the junkyard. I noticed the required switch has an autolamp wheel on it, so I grabbed an autolamp module and the ported relay cover it needs while I was there. Uh oh, there's no plug for the autolamp module under my dash! I pulled the long panel...

How much did you pay for your Expedition?

$2150. It needed an AC compressor, transmission service, front end rebuild, CD changer, front bumper, and tons of little bitty stuff when I got it. I did all of that except the AC (I am certified and capable but just too lazy) and the actual alignment. I rebuilt the front end myself, and I did...

    Throttle sticking again

I usually lift up on the gas pedal when the throttle sticks, but to no avail. I was messing with it yesterday and put my hands on the air intake. That caused the idle to surge again. I think the cruise cable is damaged where it sits between the air intake and the upper radiator hose. There's...

    Throttle sticking again

When I got my Expedition, occasionally the engine would race when I had it in park or neutral. My scanner showed that the throttle position was varying between 18 and 22%. I cleaned out the throttle body as per advice given here and it settled to 18% consistently. The problem vanished... for a...
