Lots of threads on this topic. Here is one, which includes another post of mine with links to a bunch of the other threads:

Final update here....
After dropping the truck off on Wednesday, they called Friday night and said it was ready to be picked up. It's been driving like a dream since I picked it up on Saturday.
Per the paperwork:
"CDF Cylinder bushing failure; Found burnt C D and F clutch due to CDF cylinder...
I think the 4th gens clearly had some issues early on in the run. Mine was one of the first 5,000 off the line, so I think I have had more problems than most. My three "big issues" have been:
1) the 4wd hub actuator failure (which has been fixed on later model years)
2) the cam phaser issue...
Even though the TSB clearly describes what my vehicle is doing, and my truck was built in the applicable timeframe, when they plug my VIN into the system, the TSB does not come up as applicable to my vehicle.
So because they duplicated the problem and acknowledge something is wrong, rather than...
Update (if anyone cares ... I bet they don't)
Ford approved a new transmission, but it's backordered. Could be a month, could be 3 months. So I have my truck back and they'll call me when it shows up.
*Update*
They replicated the issue! It took the tech driving around all afternoon, but they got it to misbehave!
Bad news: the TSB referenced at the top of this thread doesn't apply to my VIN (apparently).
Good news: the tech and my service advisor think they will just put a whole new...
Yes, you and I (and others) clearly have/had the same problem.
The real pain in getting it fixed is that the issue only presents during a long drive, i.e. 2+ hours. So it's not like they are going to be able to start the vehicle cold and replicate it. I did tell them I'd be happy to have them...
Mine is at the dealer getting this work done as we speak. My service advisor said there is another Expi in the shop (or maybe due in today) with the same symptoms for the same work.
My 18 has been great. It was one of the earliest ones built (February 2018) and has had a couple issues (cam phasers and a transmission problem), but they've all been sorted and I've been pleased in 4 years of ownership. I think most of the 18s floating around have had all the kinks worked out...
Exactly. I can survive on wings, pizza, and beer...but I wont be my best self.
I spent $70k+ on the vehicle, I'm happy to spring for the extra clams to give it the good stuff. I also believe it'll be better for long-term reliability even if there is no tangible performance benefit in the...
This is what I'm thinking...
Obviously, many of us on here have had to deal with the "I'm driving at highway speeds, punch the accelerator, the trans gets confused and drops out of gear, engine redlines, then the trans goes in to first, then it finds its correct gear...all while the traffic...
On #3, the lane departure system only functions above 40mph...so if you're below that speed they will remain grey. The sensor is in the rearview mirror housing:
It is blocked or dirty, the guage cluster should give you an alert that the system is unavailable.
No resolution. Honestly, I haven't raised the issue again with the dealer as they were pretty "meh, it happens" the first time.
It always stops over the winter so it hasn't happened in a while; I expect it will be back soon. Luckily it only lasts 60 seconds or so. If I am going to have folks...
Congrats, @99WhiteC5Coupe you win 500 Golden Internets for correctly identifying the water pump as the point of failure!!!
New water pump has been installed, entire system flushed and refilled. I will pick it up this afternoon and turn in the EcoTurd.
Great work Forumers!
55k miles.
I mentioned the water pump to my service advisor and he said he actually hadn't seen that particular point of failure. But he did acknowledge that the 3.5s are prone to very slow leaks but you can only find them when the system is pressured up (as you said).
They will pressure it...
I am low on coolant, and after I got to the office this morning and popped the hood I could smell the telltale "burning coolant" smell even though there are no signs of moisture anywhere.
I called my service advisor and it's headed in this afternoon. They will have to keep it until next week...
Recently after shutdown I will get a significant sloshing/gurgling noise from the engine bay. I can hear it in the cab as it is LOUD. It's not constant (like water running) but almost seems like it's pulsing through ... something. It sounds like something is pumping liquid through for a couple...
We've had this discussion before. And by "had this discussion" I mean someone asked the same question you did, no one answered the question, and everyone started arguing about something completely different. But hey, maybe we'll get a real answer this time...
