    Fuel Grade discussion

Use top tier fuel always. Regular or premium is your preference but you'll lose hp on regular because the engine pulls timing and reduces boost. Some people don't care but for me it was noticeable even at part throttle. You'll also get slightly better mpg on premium. For me it was like 1...

    engine coolant overtemp

Did you bleed the air out of the system? Did it happen immediately after changing the water pump and coolant? The heater core gets air trapped in it. Ford Tech Makuloco has a procedure for getting the air out.

    CDF around 3

The engine is spooling the turbos going uphill, while on the downhill there's less airflow so they aren't really doing much, even at higher RPM. The turbos will heat both the coolant and the oil when they get hot.

Catalytic Converter Help - 2017 Expedition XLT 3.5 Turbo

Any replacement cat would need to be CARB approved. CARB publishes the list of approved converters. The cat was probably contaminated from oil making it into the charge air. When I was in CA, the inspection stations didn't automatically check for replacement parts, but things may have changed. I...

Oil extractors do not work on 3.5 Ecoboost oil pans

A power ratchet makes removing the splash guard screws easier. Yes, you're still on your back. But it just zips the screws right out.

    Vibration cured!

Nice to hear of a dealership actually addressing a problem rather than punting.

Asking for a friend (Really) ...

The dipstick is on top of the transmission, next to the exhaust. The transmission needs to be at operating temperature to properly check fluid levels. I haven't had any transmission issues so I don't know what would show up with a code reader, but you can probably search for 6R80 transmission...

2022–2024 Expedition Limited/MAX buyer advice (HD Tow required, winter driving, prefer physical HVAC)

Another thing to consider. I think the CDF drum issue wasn't addressed until the 2023 model year, so I would avoid anything older to reduce risk of transmission or phaser issues.

2022–2024 Expedition Limited/MAX buyer advice (HD Tow required, winter driving, prefer physical HVAC)

My recollection is that CCD only comes on trims equipped with 22" wheels. If that is the case, it may limit the selection of suitable tires for towing. Not sure how well CCD works if you go down to a smaller wheel. It's likely tuned for the heavier unsprung weight of the 22" wheel. But...

Congrats on the purchase. What are you towing? Search for the tips on weight distribution hitch setup previously posted here.

    Changed plugs and noticed this?

The gaskets fail and oil seeps into the plug wells. You can check by pulling the coil and shining a light into the well. The torque on the plugs is very low. My recollection is around 133 lb-inch. You can get away with it for awhile, but eventually you'll want to replace them because the oil can...

Is an aftermarket intercooler really worth it for towing??

Its boost causing the elevated temps. Have to use the lower gears. Anecdotally, an oil cooler helps because the turbos are really heating up the oil when they're running hard. All that heat gets dumped into the coolant.

    Valve Cover leaking

The plastic covers crack, need to include the replacement cost.

    Valve Cover leaking

Depends on how bad the leak is. Is it dripping on anything hot? Are you running low on oil between changes?

    Overheating Issue

The 4th gen has a 10 speed. Gears 8, 9, and 10 are all overdrive gears. You can lock out the upper gears by pressing down on the gear selector repeatedly. I asked about the mileage because my engine ran hot when my water pump was failing. But that didn't happen until well beyond 100,000 miles...

    Overheating Issue

Try using a lower gear and getting RPM up a bit. The engine will generate a lot of boost to tow in an overdrive gear. More boost means more heat. If you're in a headwind, the engine could be spooling the turbos and you would not even know it's working very hard. You can monitor boost using a...

    Emissions Issues with P0430

Did you ever get this resolved? I have a P0430 I'll need to get fixed by the ned of the month for emissions testing. You used Magnaflow cats? I heard they're good quality, but seems like results may vary.

    What oil are you using

I thought this was the case as well, but it turns out that some of the 0W weights often use a superior base stock, PAO or Group 5, that make the VII less of an issue. It's been discussed ad nauseum on Bob is the oil guy. The other issue with 30wt on this engine is that fuel dilution can result...

    What oil are you using

I've used Magnatec and GTX 5W-30, but recently switched to Edge 5W-40 Euro when I tried to fix my timing code issue. Fuel dilution can cause 30WT to shear down to 20WT within a normal OCI. A lot of the OCI varies based on how the vehicle is used. Short trips, cold weather, towing, etc. may...
