I went through the same overheat problem a few years ago on one of my 4.6 trucks. I chased the problem for a couple weeks and went through two new t-stats in the process before I realized the new ones were junk. No problems since I put my old motorcraft back in. On the bright side, the truck has...
Jack up the rear and spin the tires by hand, then do the front, simple way to see if the brakes or bearings are dragging. Generally, either of those issues will cause shuddering and noise at highway speed, but it never hurts to see what they feel like.
Transfer case engaged full time would be...
You might be able to find the bumper at a salvage yard. The wiring & switch location would be the issue for me(going through the firewall, etc). Is the factory switch with the 4th stop available somewhere?

I did the timing set & oil pump on my 2000 4.6 last year. It was making quite a bit of noise at 170k. One of the plastic guides had worn through to metal, but it turned out the noise was mostly from the A/C clutch bearing. Glad to get it done though.
After cleaning & driving it a few cycles the leak was coming from the original problem location(front cover, valve cover, block)on the driver side. It was very little, but I couldn't let it go. I re-set the valve cover again with fresh puckey.
I opted for Moog lowers(new ball joint & original control arm) & Moog UCA assemblies. The lowers still look good after 8 years, but the rubber boots on the uppers didn't last beyond 5 years.
Managed to get the clutch assembly replaced the last couple of days. Like a knucklehead I fiddled around with removing the old pulley for a couple of hours before realizing it helps to remove the snap ring. It came off pretty easy after that, no puller required, just gentle persuasion with a...
The new clutch hub is working great, but the noise coming from the area is not going away. I went ahead & ordered a complete clutch assembly when I got the hub, but I was hoping the hub would solve my noise problem. Alas, it didn't. I was beginning to think the noise was the timing chain on that...
I can see now it's not the filter gasket, but the wire harness & oil cooler line are wet with oil(at least they are in the area around the PS pump & the filter adapter. I will try to get some brake cleaner in there this afternoon, maybe get the leak bracketed at least.
It seems the leak is still around after all. Not much, but there's a couple of small spots under the truck now & some oil collecting in the tray under the filter. If it's seeping from the same place at the cover I can't see it. I have a suspicion the leak is coming from the oil filter...
My last effort at sealing the leaky driver-side valve cover seems to have worked. I contacted Summit about the timing chain straight guides not fitting my engine & they informed me I had ordered a kit for the Mustang Windsor engine. Not sure how I missed that detail, but now I'm wondering if...
I'm trying to think how long that remnant of a hub was doing the job with one nub. The only time I ever noticed an issue was about a month ago the AC just stopped cooling in the middle of a 40 minute drive. I cycled the AC switch off and back on, started cooling again.
I replaced the hub...
Just got the timing chain project wrapped up on my 2000 XLT 4.6 & now I need to address another issue that's been around a couple of summers. The AC compressor clutch has been rattling for awhile, but it keeps working, so I put it off.
Since I spent quite a bit of time under the truck the last...
Leak was the joint where the left valve cover, front cover, & head meet up. I didn't give the goop long enough to set up, I guess. The oil pump is definitely working, that was a steady stream flowing out of there.
I did not want to pull the valve cover completely off again, but I did loosen...
I pulled off the front cover again this week. :-(
All 4 oil pump mounting screws were indeed lose, but especially the 2 that pull it up to the block flange. So the pump was pumping all right, but mostly right back into the pan. Apparently, when I slipped the new pump onto the crankshaft it was...
Haven't had time to get back to my oil pressure issue until today. I did pick up a long-reach 1/4" ratchet which allowed me to get the last oil pan screw out. BTW, I kind of expected the pan to be stuck to the block, but it just dropped free. It wouldn't clear the crossmember of course, but the...
