Leak was the joint where the left valve cover, front cover, & head meet up. I didn't give the goop long enough to set up, I guess. The oil pump is definitely working, that was a steady stream flowing out of there.

I did not want to pull the valve cover completely off again, but I did loosen all the screws, prop the front edge up, clean between the meeting areas, and squeeze a new dab at each spot. That was last night, I'll give it a test run later today.

If that does it I'll just need to clean all that mess off the suspension, steering box, etc, on that side.

My last effort at sealing the leaky driver-side valve cover seems to have worked. I contacted Summit about the timing chain straight guides not fitting my engine & they informed me I had ordered a kit for the Mustang Windsor engine. Not sure how I missed that detail, but now I'm wondering if there's going to be a problem with the other parts in the kit.

It seems the leak is still around after all. Not much, but there's a couple of small spots under the truck now & some oil collecting in the tray under the filter. If it's seeping from the same place at the cover I can't see it. I have a suspicion the leak is coming from the oil filter adapter-to-block gasket but it's very hard to get a look in there. I suppose the oil filter seal might be leaking if I missed some trash on the mounting surface.

Time to climb back under again :-(

Can you clean it off with some brake cleaner and watch it with the motor running ? If it’s the oil filter gasket it’ll show pretty quick. Or can you tell how high up the oil trail starts ?

I can see now it's not the filter gasket, but the wire harness & oil cooler line are wet with oil(at least they are in the area around the PS pump & the filter adapter. I will try to get some brake cleaner in there this afternoon, maybe get the leak bracketed at least.

I am following this thread with great interest. Are you folks replacing the timing components and oil pump because because of some sort of failure like my sons 5.4 3 valve or just out of a abundance of caution. My 2001 4.6 has about 300k and runs like new, original timing stuff.

In my case I could hear the chain dragging on the guide . It has a distinctive sound.

After cleaning & driving it a few cycles the leak was coming from the original problem location(front cover, valve cover, block)on the driver side. It was very little, but I couldn't let it go. I re-set the valve cover again with fresh puckey.
