With the transmission engaging overdrive, I would expect a RPM change. My 2000 XLT has a enable/disable OD switch.
Another thought would be the torque converter being switched to locked mode and that may not necessarily change the RPM.

There was a recall on the cruise control system. My cruise control stopped working and I took it to Ford to fix. They replaced a module, as part of the recall, and it began working again. May you be so lucky here. :happy107:

Could the "binding" be valve touching piston? My thinking is if you're turning only the cam, and not the crank, things are liable to "touch" each other.
