Did another beach trip recently. Sand mode is good *except* you also need to manually turn off "trailer sway control".
I got in a situation several times where I was in deep ruts in deep sand and obviously the truck is gonna sway back and forth because the ruts are not perfectly straight. Well...
Just for anyone stumbling on this thread - I ended up doing a beach trip on Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws, size 275/70R18, on the stock FX4 wheels. I had intended to be on Toyo Open Country AT3s on Method 705 wheels, size 285/75R17, but shipping got delayed.
I ran the Falken's (mine are E-rated, so...
Went with 15psi on the Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws (275/70R18) E-rated tires. Figured the truck is heavy, so you don't need to go down to 10-12psi that Jeep guys recommend, but the E-rated tires mean stiffer sidewalls so you do need to go down more than the 20psi that some truck folks recommend. 15...
I don't know how you non-max guys do it. I just got back from a week-long trip with 3 adults, 2 kids, and 1 small dog, and the Expy was too full. I would buy an even bigger version if I could.
Yeah, I've been using sand mode for the beach (soft deep sand) and 4A + TC off for back 'roads' (more packed sand).
I do have the ELSD, which sand mode does *not* seem to engage by default. But that should be independent of what the computer is doing with the transfer case anyways. I do think...
Ok, so the manual seems to indicate that in Sand mode, 4A really means 4H ("provides electronically *locked* 4 wheel drive power to the front and rear wheels") whereas 4A *not* in Sand (or mud) mode means "electronically *controlled* 4 wheel drive power to the front and rear wheels"...
And the...
So Sand mode puts the truck into 4A, turns off traction control, and holds gears longer before upshifting......does it do anything else?
Cuz if I can get everything Sand Mode does by just putting it in 4A and turning traction control off, then using the manual shifting, I'd prefer that. Just...
@loganvanderbilt
So...I did the Expedition Bilstein 5100s on all four wheels at max setting (1.6" lift), so that I could run Toyo Open Country AT3s in 285/75R17 (33.83" diameter) on Method 705 wheels (17" with 25mm offset).
But I still don't have those on the truck, so I only *think* it'll...
Going to the beach soon. What tire pressures work for these vehicles? Some guides say between 15-20psi, some say between 10-15psi... They all say even a few psi lower in that range makes a huge difference.
But it might be a little different with our trucks, given they weigh ~6000lbs. How low...
Well, Bilsteins are going on next week and I ordered the 285/75R17 Toyo OC AT3 tires on Method 705 +25m offset wheels...
So we'll see if it all fits soon enough.
Cool, thanks. So those 275/70R18s are 33.16" diameter. I'm considering 285/75R17s, which are 33.83". I assume that'll fit....especially with reduced offset (looking at some +25mm Method wheels vs stock FX4 wheels at +44mm).
I am also trying to decide between the Toyo OC AT IIIs and the Falken...
Any opinions? Looking for a tire that'll be reasonable on the highway, but better offroad than stock, good aired-down in deep sand, and better than all-seasons in winter (in the Northeast).
This is why I bought a new 2021. Get what I want (had to search dealers hundreds of miles away from me though), and pay high $60ks, for a new car with 0 miles. Or low $50ks for one with most of the hassle-free miles already on it several years old... The market is nuts right now. And probably...
So those are 33". I think I'm going to try 285/75R17 (probably Falken Wildpeak AT3W), which are 33.83". Will probably do +18mm offset wheels. Hopefully this will work!
I love the screen in my Tesla (Model 3) but I love the phsyical buttons in my Expedition. Don't know why, but physical buttons feels right for the Expy.
That said, the world will go to screens for everything - gonna have to get used to it.
I have a 2021 Max FX4. Will be doing some beach driving, and want bigger tires. I've settled on doing Bilsteins all around (all at the max 1.6" lift) instead of the Readylift 3/2.
What's the largest tire diameter I can run with the Bilsteins without having to mess with anything else?
Bump - I've been through a bunch of threads, but nobody gives any mileage numbers before/after Readylift install. Most people seem to say the ride-quality isn't much affected, though, which is nice.
