My truck is stuck in 4hi and I've been searching how to get it back to aw4d and seems to be an electrical issue to me. My reason I say this is the aw4d switch on dash, and lights in dash, 4x4, or low range in dash wont light up . I've checked fuses and so far the only fuse I found not working is number 20 . Low range comes on when key is first turned on . Has anybody gone through this problem before ? The aw4d switch lit up a couple times and then never since . If you've had this problem or have suggestions on what to check or do , Please my wife wants her truck and I really can't afford the dealer

Hey Thanks for getting back
I have tried Neutral, with and without brake pedal depressed, I've tried running and not running, I've tried removing 104 fuse out, then back in, I've tried disconnect battery, and reconnect 15 min. later. I removed switch motor which has three plugs and a single brown wire, cleaned the little sensors inside transfer case that are connected to sw.mtr and reinstalled, I have raised the front off the ground repeated all the above except the sw. mrt. thing . I have checked all fuses inside cab, (no power at #20) which by owners manual say it goes to audio (not radio) air suspension system (which is not on my truck) and GEM. I 'm no electrician, not even close but to me it seems to be an electrical problem because the light in the dash (4x4 & low range) won’t light up. Before I ever messed with the truck, it was in awd and I got stuck so I shifted (per manual directions) and 4x4 lit up then I pulled out of mud and got on firm ground and tried to go back to awd and 4x4 started blinking and stayed this way, all 30 miles back home and speedo was reading 90 mph when I was only doing about 30,, until I started the above mentioned. And the little switch near center panel doesn’t light up to tell me what selection I chose (awd)(4x4)(4low) even when I turn on the running lights. Now that I only done the above told to you, 4x4 doesn’t blink anymore or even light when I start the truck but Low range still does. Switch still doesn’t light and seems to have no current (removed plug on switch & looked for current with 12v tester, nothing,) I picked up a switch from a jyard but no results) maybe no go either. Does the switch motor supply the current to the switch on panel? I picked up one of those also, but might not be any good. Is there anyway to check switch motor or awd 4x4 4l switch? or any suggestions ? I've been told to check abs sensors but don’t their location. I been told to check vacuum system, And I will, but I think it's electric. I'm Lost!

I think you must be right on the switch motor, I have picked up three in a junk yard and also the one on my truck . after a little looking I see that the solid yellow and solid orange wires went to the motor so I applied 12 volts to them with no results. could I have tested them wrong ? Is it probable that they all were bad ? I was also recommended to check vacuum solinoids but could not locate them. Mine are not on the firewall in upper passenger near corner. I searched hard but cant find them . could they be under the battery box ? I also remove #104 fuse and #23 fuse as suggested to remove it out of 4x4 . Drove it a little but no luck there either.also cut brown wire but still in 4x4. Im still in 4x4 ! Oh one more thing , I checked with auto parts stores on switch mtrs and all of them have it but, theirs has one harness without the two extra little sensors harnesses that screw into the transfercase. I called the Ford Dealer and they cant tell me if theirs has three harnesses or one but they can tell me it's like $240. anybody know about this or anything helps!
