Hello,

I'm new here. I didn't see a post discussing this exact issue so I figured I'd ask. I just bought my 2008 Expedition EL 4x4 for a pretty good deal and it's in really good shape but with some minor issues and I'm hoping to fix it up a little and make it last me a few years.

Anyway, when I fill the tank up all the way, fuel spits back out of the tank a little before the nozzle shuts off. This is at any gas station.

Best I can figure it's some evap thing or the fuel filler vent clogged? But I'm not sure how to tell or where to look first. I don't have easy access to a lift, and the videos I've watched don't really tell me much, so I'm wondering if someone might have some insight on this.

I looked under where the filler is and can't see any obvious issues there. I was also told to check the evap solenoid under the hood but I don't know how to check its operation although I'm not getting any of the codes one would typically get if that was bad.

Any help or hints would be appreciated. Thanks!

On my 2004 Expedition, I put my ear (the good one) down by the nozzle and if there isn't too much noise, I can hear when it is about full....I haven't been splashed in the side of the head with gas yet! (mine does the same thing....must just be an expedition "thing")....

It could just be the tank 'burping' Both of my Broncos would trigger the auto shut off if they were filled too quickly. they had to be filled slowly. In addition, they never completely filled at the first trigger, and had to be rocked side to side to get the last gallon or so in. My 2009 Expy hasn't exhibited this behavior but I have experienced it with other vehicles, and it's usually just been filling quicker than the tank & filler tube can handle.

I just fill up to the point where the nozzle automatically cuts off. Every time I’ve tried to “top off” I’ve had spillage which is unlawful in my state.
