Bought a used Expedition for cheap 120,000 miles and had the CEL on. Code is P0012 bank 1 cam position over retard. I am pretty mechanically inclined I am a aircraft mechanic so I thought I could fix it myself and have a nice Expo for cheap. When I first bought it, there was clicking noise coming from bank 1 and the idle was rough. That made me start with the phaser. While changing the phaser, I noticed the chain guide was broken. So I replaced it as well as the tensioner. I am sure the phaser went on just the same way the old came off. I reset the code and the fuel mileage got better and the noise went away for the most part. After a couple of drives the light came back. So next I changed the VCT solenoid and the cam position sensor. Still a code! Am I missing something! Timing? The noise I hear now comes from the front middle like the oil pump. But if its the oil pump wouldn't you get a code for both sides? Any help would be very appreciated! My local Ford dealership was no help at all.

You problem is most likely a bit over my head I am sure others will chime in but would suggest being you appear to do your own work that you get a

Ford workshop manual on DVD. Can be obtained from seller "morpheousking" on e-bay. Cost about $10.00 Much better than Clymer, Haynes or Chilton and also includes wiring diagrams

Don't waste your money on a Clymer, Haynes or Chilton Manual.
It is well worth the $10.00 just make sure you get the DVD for your year as the seller has different DVD's for different years

P0012 - Intake Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Retarded (Bank 1)
Description: The comprehensive component monitor (CCM) monitors the variable cam timing (VCT) position for over-retarded camshaft timing. The test fails when the camshaft timing exceeds a maximum calibrated value or remains in a retarded position.
Possible Causes: Camshaft timing improperly set.
Continuous oil flow to the VCT piston chamber.
VCT solenoid valve stuck open.
Camshaft advance mechanism binding (VCT unit).

Thanks for the quick reply. I love doing my own work and been using a Haynes. It leaves a lot to the imagination though. I will have to look into the dvd. Can the VCT unit be un stuck if you remove it? I did see it with the timing cover off and looks like the valve cover has to be removed to gain access to the hardware. Or would it be easier to just replace it. I saw the whole unit for sale when I bought the solenoid but didn't think I needed it. Thank you.
