06King Ranch 267K miles.- keep or change

i bought this truck new and put the 267k miles on it. It has been wonderful vehicle but now wondering whether to continue to keep and fix or get another.

Used Mobil 1 oil and transmission fluid whole time and replaced AC and some kind of separator plate in tranny but now there is thump when tranny is coasting but works great under power. Also front end worn out and estimate is $1300 to replace worn parts.

I need to either fish or cut bait with my vehicle and bite the bullet on the front end repair but I don’t want to do that if there is a serious tranny problem looming.

Any advice from the pros would be appreciated. All other items on truck work well.

It's hard to say without knowing more about the transmission, perhaps having that diagnosed can sway you one way or the other.

What do you get for $1,300? Guessing lower balls and upper control arms for both sides?

My '03 is at 209,000, hoping she'll last another 5 years or more!

If the funds allow, go fishing for a new truck. You've gotten good service so far, but like so many things in life, its time! You'll get some here that will say keep it, but 2 things that are against you, 1, you've got one of the trouble year engines, you've been lucky so far, and 2, nothing lasts forever. No I'd start shopping for a newer truck, and pass this old friend down to another.

I’ve also got 2 long road trips in the near future. Last time I rented an SUV to be safe.

I can go get another newer SUV I just hate to spend the money. I am retired and need to be careful with new toys.

May go get transmission checked and drive old faithful mostly local...depending on results. Drive new one for most of trips.

Your smart on the rental. Nothing can and will ruin a trip like a breakdown. Rental cars rarely break, and if they do who cares. Send me another one please. I know what you mean about retired and limited income. I too am retired, and hang onto my 2000 Eddie. I'd love a 2018 F150, but at $46,000 for a lariat, just a dream at this point.

Like you, it has earned it's retirement.

But that depends on the reliability you need. If it's just puttering around town, you can drive it until the rear falls out of it.

I just got rid of my 2000. Killed me to buy a newer truck -- they're not cheap even when several years old, and I'm a pensioner too. But now's a time in life I like to travel a bit and I didn't need the worries of yet another repair.

When I looked over my 2000 with a clear head, I realized it's time to go: High mileage, rusty brake lines, and a leaky converter.

Like I've always said, hang on to the wife and kids with a death grip, the vehicles, and other crap, let it go, and you'll always have the memories. Could you imagine still driving your first or second car, without totally restoring it. Even then, were in our 60/70's, its never the same. We all wish we could get a rerun at 18, but sadly we got to move on to the next chapter.

I have a 05 with 278k well taken care of in fact I still get people asking if the truck is new when they get inside, everything works and we all still enjoy. I think it all depends on your needs. For me, I will be handing the truck down to my some in the next year or so. We will be either rebuilding or be putting a remanufactured engine into the truck. I have redone the suspension and rebuilt the trans when I lost OD about a year ago. I would be doing this even if I was not giving to my son, especially with the cost of new trucks. That being said getting new gives you a good piece of mind. New trucks are expensive and unless you buy outright have high monthly payment and increased insurance cost, with your older truck you would have to figure 8k to 10k investment for suspension, engine and possibly trans (You could go cheaper but I would spend on the engine) but at the end no monthly but still old bits on it. Whichever route like me our engines are at the end of life, though I just had mine checked over and the mechanic said I could probably get another 100k out but I am not going to chance that myself. Just Me.

Thanks to all who answered. I am not a mechanic but take good care of my vehicles. That said, I think I will start the process of looking at a replacement and hold on to my 06 for a while . My kids are grown and have grandchildren out and in college so no one to hand to close by. Probably get a smaller SUV anyway this time. This is my third Ford Expy all with over 200k each so it has been a good run. Prob get an explorer this time

Newbie to Expy but love the truck, bought with 118,000 for 10,300 six months ago. With your mileage, you have got your miles out of your truck and maintained it to get there. Me personally, I like to buy something a couple years old, but this truck was the one. This will not be my last Expedition, have driven eight E250 vans over the years and have had very good experience with Ford vehicles.

I have a well taken care of 2003 EB with 228k miles. Knock on wood, she’s still going strong. Replaced the fuel pump recently but everything else working fine. I hope to drive her for many many more miles. I am a recent retiree not on SS yet so I am looking to save money as well.

I believe the key to all the high mileage is using synthetic and regular oil changes. It is not uncommon to hear someone going three hundred thousand and still running with regular maintenance.
