My wife drove our 07 Expedition (5.4L) throughout the day with no problems, then in the evening it wouldn't start. It seemed like a battery problem because the headlights were very dim and there were a lot of clicking noises when I tried to start it. I tried a jump start with no luck - the Expedition cranked and cranked but would not turn over. Now I'm wondering if it is something different than the battery. Any thoughts/suggestions of what to check next?

Thanks in advance.

Could you clarify, "cranked and cranked but wouldn't turn over" because "cranking" and "turning over" are kind of the same thing.

Do you mean that the starter was spinning but the engine wouldn't fire?

Or

Do you mean that when you turned the key the starter wouldn't spin?

Also, did she notice any dash warning lights on during the day?

I would usually point directly to a bad battery cable or connection, but since it's only 2 years old, that may not be the issue. It sure sounds like a battery or alt was the FIRST problem, but now there may be another since it doesn't want to start. I'd start pulling some fuses to check that something isn't blown. When you jumped it did you use a car or one of those jump boxes? I've heard of people blowing the ecu with a (malfunctioning?) jump box.

I agree with Tony that the first issue sounded like a battery/alternator problem. A few things it could be now are a bad ground connection, the fuel inertia switch, a bad fuse/relay, bad fuel pump, or possibly the PATS system not recognizing the chip in the key. Easy checks are the fuses and inertia switch. Next I would check the grounds leading from the battery and selonoid. You should be able to hear the pump go on when initially turning the key to on, but not running. For that you might want to be under the vehicle (or near the pump) and someone turn the key to "On". For the PATS, first try another key, after that I am unsure what you could do. On older models the "Theft" light would be blinking rapidly to show there was a PATS module/ignition failure, but on the newer models not sure what the lights do on the dash.
Hope this helps a little. Kind of a shot in the dark without seeing it in person.

Good question. While the jumper cables were connected, the starter spun but the engine would not fire. Really strange. How can I check the fuel inertia switch?

Thanks,

How long did you have it hooked up to the jumper cables? Also, did the "jumper car"(car giving you the jump) rev his engine while jumping you? If the battery was really dead, it could take a while before it was charged up?

Maybe take the battery to Advanced/Autozone to have them check/charge it?

Granted, then you'd have to wonder why your battery was so discharged...
