When I pulled up into my driveway tonight I noticed a clicking sound when I was shifting up to PARK from DRIVE. The clicking sound happens between REVERSE and PARK. So I decided to do a little more investigation on it by shutting the engine off and shifting the shifter through all the gears. After doing it for about 4 or 5 times, the shifter stopped in REVERSE and it won't shift into PARK. Any ideas? Has something like this happened to anyone that owns an 08? I was gonna take the console off, but it was pretty tight. I don't want to force it and brake something. Then I'll be more pissed off.

I'm not 100% sure if these vehicles can be started when in neutral, but it's worth a try. Then see if you can get it back into park. If not, are you still within the warranty for miles? If so, I would let the dealer take care of it.

It should start in neutral. It almost sounds like a problem with the shift interlock (I think that's what it's called). It's the thing that stops you from shifting out of park unless the brake is pushed down.

Try turning the truck on in N. While pushing the brake, shift into P.

Took it to the dealership today. They said it needs a new shifter assembly (over $500 with labor). I'm at 39800 miles and I didn't get the extended warranty. I talked to the service manager, and she said this has been a ongoing problem with the Expeditions, Explorers and F150's with the floor shifters. And even though this has been ongoing, Ford is not recalling it. She suggested that I call Ford Customer Assistance Headquarters and find out from them what they can do for me. I'll keep my fingers crossed and see what happens.. But I think I'm SOL

Update: Ford agreed to cover half of the cost since I'm not to much far off my warranty. Whew!!! That was a big help, especially in this economy. When I called, I'm thinking the worst they can say is NO. I'm glad I did it. Now I got to look at that extended warranty packet. Thanks FORD!!!!

Good to hear they stepped up and helped out a bit. Kind of surprising actually.
