Looking at a 2000 Expy with 110,000 miles. Owner is not original, but knew the original owner and says he has all receipts from new. I pulled a Carfax and everything is clean. It shows a major service at around 70,000 miles with plugs, boots, etc changed out. But that was 10 years ago. Called a couple local shops and a 120,000 service ranges from around $700 to $1,000 which includes plugs, PCV, diff fluid, crank case clean, oil and filter change, and a couple other little things.

If the owner does not have receipts for a more recent, major service, would you be too concerned? Am I looking at a time bomb if I don't get the service done right after purchase?

Thanks

$700 is acceptable but $1000 NFW. I’d also do the tranny fluid and radiator fluid.

I can do the diff fluid change, and radiator flush, but not the tranny. Would also pay a shop to do the plugs and PCV valve just to get a set of professional eyes on the rig to make sure everything looks good.

Thanks for the post.

If it’s a 4x4 consider doing the front diff and transfer case oil too.

Change plugs, boots, coolant, Trans and different fluids. Brake fluid is also a good idea.. Crank case clean sounds like bs and you can't prove if it was actually done. You should have to clean the crankcase unless something catastrophic went wrong

^^^ Thanks. I'm taking it to a shop on Monday for a full inspection. But my plan is trans and diff fluids, and serpentine belt. The plugs and boots were done ~ 60,000 ago.

The transmission should have a drain plug on the pan and a drain plug on the torque converter. Pull both of those plugs and refill. That will be WAY better than a flush. And cheaper too.

^^^ Truck has a remanufactured Jasper unit installed ~ 10,000 miles ago. So, the tranny fluid should be GTG. It's going in for a full inspection tomorrow. Going to have them change the diffs and transfer case fluids. The serpentine belt, I think, will also need a change - it's not loose or squeaky, but I can see some hairline cracks. The steering wheel has a little play (maybe 1/2" either way), so might need some work on the front suspension too - who knows?

We'll see what they come up with.

Do the belt yourself. It's a quick and easy job that isn't worth paying someone the labor for. Advance Auto even has a loaner tool for the job if need be.

^^^ Good to know. Some of them are a pain. I'll do the tensioner at the same time as a preventative.

Thanks

Tensioner is a good call. I had mine go from DEFCON 5 to DEFCON 1 within a week. When I removed it, it came out in pieces and I saw that it had started to chew into my front cover. Going forward I decided I would just replace it as maintenance before it started making noise. Check the idlers also. I don't know abut the 1st gens, but on the 3rd gens those fail often. I've replaced 3 in 110k.

Paid for a full inspection at the shop. Everything looks great except...the upper and lower ball joints. They took pics and yep, they are toast. I like to wrench, but this is one thing I'm not going to tackle. I had a feeling they were toast when I purchased the truck, so I have some $$$ set aside for repairs. Good to know this is the only big thing I really have to pay for.

Thanks for all your help.
