1998 Gear Indicator

The red gear indicator on my 1998 Expedition dash panel is off by about 1 gear.....that is...... when I'm in park the indicator shows I'm in/near reverse; when I'm in drive it shows I'm in/near 2nd, etc.

Is there a simple fix?

Is there a serious problem?

On the 03-06, I know you can adjust it by turning a adjuster screw/gear/wheel. I'd think it'd be the same with yours. I think you see if it you take off the upper steering colomn shroud.

Find the selector cable underneath the dash/just to the left of the steering column.
