Hello,

First time on site and hopefully you guys can help me out. I just bought a 2005 Expedition Eddie Bauer from a guy for 5900. I was a bit worried as I drove it home because I started hearing a very small hiss when pushing the gas on the freeway, but I figured it was just the way the car sounds because I've never owned an expedition before.

So that was yesterday and today after I drove it I noticed the check engine light came on. So the guy must have reset the code before I went to buy it...

The code that came up was P0420 Bank 1 and P0430 Bank 2. I read online that it could be the catalyc converter, but I also remember that before I went to buy the car the guy told me the car was running rough because he had washed the engine. He took it to his mechanic and he changed the spark plug cables.

Could it be because of water sitting somewhere that these codes came up? I received the code in the freeway when I was going about 60mph. I'm going to go clear the code now to see if it stays off, but I have a feeling it will be back.

Any advice will be appreciated. I contacted the seller and he told me no refunds and he sells cars as is. I am ok with car mechanics so I can probably do the work myself unless its something real serious.

Any help would be really appreciated. I'm having a hard time sleeping thinking that the engine is going to go bad on this thing.

I'm hoping it was just him wetting the spark plugs which lead to bad shaking then killing the Catalyc converter. Now that he changed the spark plugs if I change the catalyc converter, hopefully those are the only problems.......

If I don't change teh catalyc converter soon, will that damage anything?

How many miles on it?

Know when the last time the upstream O2 sensors were replaced?

Do you see any exhaust leaks on the manifolds or exhaust pipes.

you read well, huh? he just said he bought it, so he doesnt know the maintnance history.

i'd say its more than just the cat and )2 sensors causing it to run rough and shake like you are describing. sounds more like ignition or fuel supply, but dont take my word for it.

Is it running rough now?? Cylinder misfire is one of the potential causes of the codes your getting. It would be common with washing the engine and getting water into the spark plug wells. I do not believe there are plug wires on the 3v motors, only coil on plugs, unless he was referring to the wiring harness?! Make sure he did not delete the rear cats?! Its a popular modification..

Sorry it's been a while since I posted. The car has been running fine and the error came back a few days later, but the light did not come on. I cleared it again and it has not came back for more than a week now so hopefully it doesn't return. The car never ran rough or anything, I just noticed that it does not sound like my other cars and was nervous about it.

My wife was driving the car today and she noticed that the car was going about 30mph, but the gauge showed it was going 60. She got off the freeway and took the car back home. She said the noise the car makes started getting louder. The sound is kinda like the muffler is leaking which I thought was probably because of the converter.

I'm not home yet to check it, but sounds like I just got f*** over by this guy. Whatever the problem is, is probably not just the converter.

Hey King druid, I see you are in CA ... actually a few miles down the 5 Fwy from me. Lets assume its a worse case scenario with the info given and it is the Cats. As you may know in CA we literally would rather be prison ***** than get Catalytic converters in this state. Bank 2 assembly is about $1600. and that's without O2 sensors. I did my cats for $160, semi legal, and will pass smog. I would start with some fuel injector cleaner, checking for any vacuum leaks, new fuel filter, air filter and MAF cleaning with actual MAF Sensor cleaner. see if that improves anything.

Yeah I took it to a muffler place and they told me Both Converters are bad. If you can pm me the info on the converter you used I Would really apreciate it
