So after a little bit of searching archives here as well as the internet, I saw there were some concerns about running MMO in the 5.4 Triton 3v. and the cam phasers.

What I didn't find was the reasons for this concern. So what's bad about running MMO in these engines that have cam phasers (I know these engines have issues with cam phasers) but don't understand how it can affect them in a negative way.

Marvel Mystery Oil is one of many marketing scams that at best, do no harm. For example, "The lubricant was used as a fuel additive in a Lycoming aircraft engine which was specifically cautioned against oil additives (Service Instruction No. 1014M, which also stated its use would void the warranty) which suffered catastrophic damage during take-off. The NTSB listed the probable cause of the accident as "The improper use of [a] fuel additive which resulted in a power loss."[4][6]" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Mystery_Oil)

The best example of the power of marketing is Andy Granatelli's STP. I've studied both marketing, and internal combustion engines. I was taught that if any such additives actually make a difference, they are merely hiding a real problem that needs to be identified and repaired.

referring to the beginning of my post, Ford recommends against additives. As Lycoming did. It's your car, your money, and your decision.

the only additive I've ever used is octane booster, and then only for a very limited time.

The cam phasers use the engine oil as hydraulic fluid. If the oil doesn't flow properly or gums up the passageways in the phasers things can go sideways.

Joe... Thanks for that bit of info but I'm not running this in my fuel system, I have used SeaFoam for that and had very good results with that. As far as MMO being a "snake-oil" opinions vary on that... I do trust this guys experiments though (as far as a "real world" test goes) Not that this is the end all be all proof here. More just this guy actually puts some thought into his tests he does (no matter what the topic). That and page after page of testimonies and videos of folks using it and having used it for yrs. Again I appreciate you insight and opinion. You may not be wrong!

MJP2 since MMO is more of a detergent/cleaning agent, are you thinking it could cause a break loose of sludge and gum up the works in the passage ways?

I run MMO in the fuel. If you stick with 3K oil changes you don't need any oil additives or worry about gunk building up in the engine.

I do 5k oil changes with full synthetic but see no reason for any additives. If I ever use any it definitely won't be in the engine.

"NTSB Accident Report NYC02LA181 (Lycoming aircraft engine)

...The contents of Marvel Mystery Oil were 74 percent mineral oil, 25 percent stoddard solvent, and 1 percent lard."

I don't care is it's 100% rat pee, I have good results with it and fixed quite few fuel system problems and one noisy valve lifter with it.

I figured it was just light oil and solvent, it's not going in my tank or motor. They can or bottle anything and put a price on it along with a little hype and keep selling it as long as there are buyers and laugh all the way to the bank.

Seems like half the phaser problems are caused by deposits, and the other half by incorrect oil. I'm a fan of cleaning out everything possible with solvent, and several short interval oil changes, then pulling and replacing the solenoids. That's done the trick for the last few expy owners I've talked to locally. One person had issues with Mobil1 5w20, noise vanished with 5w20 Pennzoil. Motorcraft oil seems to be magic, even if its not full synthetic.

My 140k mile truck had some nasty stuff come out the first 2 solvent oil changes. Oil is currently still honey clear, with slight noise when cold. Rotella 5w20 truck, clearanced from Advance Auto. My truck is not an SSV, but it was used as a support vehicle by a PD, no idea how many hours are on the engine, or if they had phasers replaced. Definitely not original spark plugs, the copper pipe trick worked great for getting debris out of several of the plug holes, so the socket would go on.

This is spot on, I had 230,000 on my 06 5.4 when I sold it. Yeah the 3 valve sucks but with the proper care problems can be avoided.

Most of the phaser problems are caused by low oil pressure, that's why I have a real gauge.
