2012 Expedition Limited, with AC on it blows nice cold air on the drivers side. However, it blows HOT air from the upper vents on passenger side. Of course, didn't notice this during winter months but now that it's warming up in Ohio, I need a solution or the Mrs. is not going to want to ride with the old man.

If you get cold air from any of the vents, then the refrigerant charge is likely just fine. The issue is probably the passenger side blend door, or, less likely, the multi-zone temperature controller.

I had this happen in a Hyundai. Thought it was a blend door on one side. Turns out the car had only one blend door. The charge was low and was only getting one side of the evaporator coil cold.

I don't know your 2012 but on my 08, the service manual shows separate blend door actuators for the left and right side. Right side actuator shows behind the radio right on top of the housing so it would a relatively easy one to get to. If you alternate the a/c controls from cold to heat you may hear some clicking. That would indicate gears going bad. If the motor in the actuator fails then there is no sound but you can check that watching for shaft movement. I had an 07 for quite a few years and over time ended up having to replace all but one actuator in the front and rear a/c.

If you can adjust temperature for driver and passenger individually you have two blend doors, only way it works. One is stuck.

I had a similar experience recently with my 14, hot air on drivers side, cool air on passengers side. Took it to my regular (not Ford) mechanic. they ran some diagnostics, fiddled about a bit and it resumed working as it always had. The AC specialist had no idea what he did. It just started working again. Sounds like the blend door.

Thanks to all who have chimed in. I don't hear any "clicking" sound which suggests that the blend door actuator is toast. However, I'm going to check the refrigerant level just to be sure. Hopefully my local Ford dealer won't "Frank & Jessie James" me to the tune of big $.
