My 4wd EL with 48k miles has transmission sounds like I am running over a pot hole intermittingly. It is like a clunking noise. Usually it happens at 65 mph+. I just took a 6 hour trip and it clunked three times on the trip. Is this serious? I need to go another 7 hours tomorrow, and I don't want to hurt the car.

At only 48k, it's possible but not likely on the Ujoint. Usually they go bad at a higher mileage, but check them just the same. Couple other things to check would be front and rear struts, and sway bars. Also shake down the exaust, to be sure it's not hitting the frame.

Changing the tranny oil is one of the better things I have done. My clunks went away - though immediately better, it took a while for complete recovery. Ford says 105k or something, forum says 60k and I agree.
