So I lowered the 3rd row seat and raised it again with the switch (of course) and now I can hear clicking noises coming from the passenger rear cowl near the seat control switch at a regular interval -- is there a relay or limit switch or actuator acting up under there or?

Great intuition. Here's a link to a site showing the location of a relay box on that side of the vehicle:

I've got the wiring diagram manual (but it doesn't show locations). It takes 3 pages of wiring diagrams for the third row seat controls! It calls out:
"Auxiliary Relay Box
11-6
156-26"
Also, there's a Power-Fold Seat Module (PFSM) 151-24 151-27 that may also be worth a look.

Turned out it was a failed rear HVAC blend actuator that decided to fail after I repositioned the rear seat - great timing - thanks for the suggestions

Dang. Beat me. Was gonna say it's the rear HVAC. Very very common. Even my 2 GM Trailblazers do this!
