My wife's 2019 Expedition Max had a recall for PCM reprogramming. It currently has 101k miles on it. She took it in last week and they performed the recall at no charge. Literally the next morning when we got in it, we started it up and heard an awful rattle for a few seconds then it went away. It has done it every day since then. Today I looked it up and determined its the camphaser rattle. What's odd though, is that it has NEVER done this before until we did the PCM reprogramming.

Has anyone else run into this? Is this just a coincidence? I know the vehicle is no longer in warranty, but if the reprogramming caused this to start happening, do I have any ground to stand on to ask Ford to fix the camphasers as part of warranty?

My 2018 Limited with HD towing package and 145,000 miles had the PCM reprogram recall performed, too. Had some rattling afterward but has since stopped. Transmission gear display went dark after, though. I will have that addressed with coming 150,000 service.

I'm sure you prolly knew this and tried it but I was playing around with the + and - buttons by shifter and if you push + it'll turn on and off the Trans gear display

I just had that recall update done on my 2021 Expedition Max and luckily, no vibrations. It's always worth an ask, maybe have them re-try it and see if it goes away. A tech left my plug undone dangling at my feet and required a re-visit + tool to re-connect it.

Thought I had Cam phaser rattle. Turned out to be my starter. Found out the hard way one morning when the family was in town and we went out for breakfast.
Luckily my brother is shorter and slimmer than I am and was able to fit underneath. Damn CCD shocks leave no space underneath the truck.
Motorcraft starter from the Dealership Made in Mexico. Haven't heard the rattle since.

There is also a tab for an exhaust rattle as well.
My brother who is a Ford Tech recommends going back to Ford and have them double check what recall was done if it is concerning.
Cam Phaser Rattle will make your heart sink.
