roommate went out to start my 99 4.6xlt, crank and fired then immediately died. now every time turn the ingnition, it sounds like a flywheel or starter is spinning. won't fire at all. why would it start then die and now sounds like that? im on vacation and my roommate had to borrow it because his truck doesnt move in snow. this is exactly why you don't let anyone use your things, no matter what!!!

How long did it "start" before it died? The sound you hear now that sounds like "the flywheel or starter"...Something is working when the key is turned? Does it sound like the engine is cranking or not?
I ask, because it sounds like the starter may be "stuck, engaged" with flywheel causing the engine to stall after starting?!?

I would think that the engine would over power the starter enough to keep the engine from stalling. I have had problems before with my engine stalling after it was first started when it is really cold. That could be your problem when it started, then died, and the starter could be bad. When the key is turned to start the engine, does the starter spin by itself, or is the motor turning over also. This should be easy to distinguish. If the starter spins by itself, your solenoid on the starter probably went bad like mine did a few weeks ago, and won't push the starter gear out to turn the flywheel.
