The 5.4 is a good engine of any year when taken care of minus maybe 05’. My 2007 went to almost 180,000 miles without a single engine related issue and purred like a kitten before being wrecked. The oil was always changed.

prior to 2008 there are random failures of the cam chain tensioner system (gasket blowing out causing loss of oil pressure to the tensioners), this is a random event and doesn't seem to be linked to regular or poor oil changes, its just a weakness in the design, from 2008 onwards it seems to have been cured, hence my recomendation for 2009 onwards!! Most years are good, but I feel that you are playing Russian roulette with an engine prior to 2009!!

from 2005 to 2008, beware of the 2 piece spark plugs on the 3V engine. they like to break when being removed, and can result in a multi-thousand dollar repair bill. Ford apparently will not stand behind them - some horror stories I've hear, Ford blew owners off even when they did the work that broke the plug!

In fact, I've almost come to expect it. Especially if really ridiculous.

99-2002 5.4l/4.6l are the best(many still on the road). Vehicles with the 2005-2009 5.4l 3v have a lower resale. If the original owner took care of them. They do last. Its the 'what if', when buying one used.

My 2007 has 230,000 miles on it and gets 19 mpg at 65 mph on the highway. 4WD. I love that engine.

I have an 05 290k original 5.4 3v engine is good actually been great, cam phasers are the issue and will need to be replaced
