Adding a Transmission Cooler to Ford Expedition Timberline (2022-2024)
— Experiences, Conversions & Tips —

Hi everyone,

I’d like to start a thread to discuss adding an auxiliary transmission cooler to the Ford Expedition Timberline (2022-2024 models).

Key Points to Discuss:

  1. Transmission type: from my understanding, these models come with the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
  2. Installation attempts: Has anyone here successfully installed a cooler on these newer Timberline/Expedition models? What was your experience?
  3. Adapters / kits: Is there any adapter, conversion kit, or special fitting that helps connect a cooler line to the transmission?
  4. Overheating issue: Many of us experience high transmission temps — especially in hot climates or when towing trailers.
  5. Resources: If anyone has pictures, diagrams, part numbers, or links to aftermarket kits, please share them here.

Let’s share knowledge and ideas
so we can find the safest and most effective way to add a transmission cooler for these vehicles.

Thanks in advance to anyone who contributes!

I was driving in desert with ambient temp 50 Celsius on sand mode, where rpm are higher and temp went slighly higher than middle after few hours( it was driving on 2-3k rpm and stopping, not cruising).
When was driving on highway with ambient 50 Celsius with 120kmh all was standard middle

I have been trying to find all of the parts from the F-150 Raptor (circa 2020) for my 2019 Expedition Limited.
rumor has it that the hardware is supposed to be "plug and play" with our 10R80 set up, versus the F-150 Raptor setup...

Also, my first experience with Transmission overheat was due to a faulty/"stuck" original factory Thermostat...
I replaced that original one with the newer part number that is supposed to correct the previous thermostat and its feature of getting stuck in the closed position...

someday my wallet should be full enough to get the cooling swap over completed...

I believe the gen2 raptor components work because the oil cooler is externally mounted and not apart of the radiator assembly itself. Use the ford parts website and a vin for a 2017-2019 raptor and pull the part numbers from there. It should, for the most part, bolt right up as the subframe from the firewall forward is, I believe, a shared component between the f150s and expeditions.

    1. Correct.

    1. Yes & No. I can vouch that I got the Raptor Mishimoto transmission cooler radiator installed and it did mount up with no issues as intended for the F-150. I got halfway through my project before my previous truck was totaled out, and I haven't been back to doing it again.
  3. Adapters / kits: Is there any adapter, conversion kit, or special fittingthat helps connect a cooler line to the transmission?
    1. There are shadetree guys that have done numerous ways of going about this. Most of these mods have been done by the F-150 guys, but same principle applies. There are no complete kits but most of these guys list the various adaptors and pieces to make it work.
      1. Supplement the HX and add the external cooler.

      2. Eliminate the HX and run a dedicated cooler.

    1. The OEM thermostat is often the first culprit. Even when working normally, it leaves a lot to be desired in operating temperatures. A lot of people upgrade to the revised Ford OEM unit if the original is old. Other option is to go 170* or 180*. I have done the 170* and see normal ECT & Transmission temps in the 185* (85* C) zone. Being in SA, I would highly recommend this mod first!
      1. SPD Thermostat
    2. I have also gutted my grille shutters. I studied with the scan tool how these were operating, and unless you were running MAX A/C on a hot day, they never would open much. That even went for the charge cooler (intercooler). They would normally be about 25-30% open from what I found. If A/C was not on (windows down cruising), the shutters would be nearly closed and my ECT's would go up considerably.
