And something just let go in my engine.

How bad is this?

Did the 08 still have plug blowout issues?

But it does sound like a plug is out or exhaust leak.
Why the mystery why not look under the hood with cam?

I had several appointments I had to get to. I limped it to the nearest parking lot, snapped a quick vid to get a couple ideas, and had to leave.

I won’t be able to get my hand in the engine bay until tomorrow afternoon.

I appreciate the armchair diagnosis, it helps me decide whether I want to fix it myself or to tow it to a mechanic.

General consensus seems to be plug. That I can likely handle.

2008s don’t have the same plug spitting problem as 1st gens, but that sounds like you spit a plug out. Possible it’s just loose.

Getting any error codes ? Plug blowout would give you a few codes. But it does sound like that. Have the plugs been replaced recently ? Maybe somebody just didn't torque 'em down ? Or used the wrong style plug in there. ( '08 used two possible style plugs...)

My 2001 would take a few seconds to reset the cluster when the battery was weak.

So, found the time to dive into this on Sunday.

This is what I found on cylinder 5:

Looks like damaged threads and a plug blowout.

I’ve been throwing codes for a cylinder 3 misfire, so I decided to change all the plugs (NGK platinum), new boots and springs, and I swapped in a junkyard coil (ACDelco branded) to #3

I found something interesting in cylinder 4 too… here’s all the plugs in order:

One of these is not like the others…

Who did the last plug change on it ? What's the part number on that odd plug ? The 2008 5.4 uses two possible style sparkplugs. A Motorcraft SP509 style plug. Or a SP546 style plug. Original coils with either black, or brown boots. Brown boots would have the full thread plugs, black boots would have the half threaded plugs. But I know, over the life of the truck coils may be replaced with another coil / boot combo.... So you just have to look.
Can you use a borescope and look into the sparkplug wells and see if possibly the wrong style plug was used ? That odd plug doesn't even have the right seat on it.... Geez ....

I'm brown boots, full thread. I'm going to blame the prior owner for whatever that was....

Complete set of plugs installed with new boots/springs. Added 3mpg to my average (11.6 to 14.7). Cured the #3 misfire, although I still have codes for cam/crank correlation.

Despite showing 107k on the odo I was able to determine the body has about 315k
Engine is unknown, all vehicle history is unknown, maintenance history is unknown.

I would borescope both those cylinders just to be sure what happened here. Especially #5 with the crimped electrode. Very odd indeed. Best case, maybe the plug was bad from the get go and water got inside the insulator and boiled out, or worse case something bounced into the cylinder and smashed the electrode.
