I routinely hit 17-20 on the interstate at 80 mph, even with some headwind. A week ago, we had my wife’s forester on the same stretch, same speed, typical headwind- mpg was as low as 14 never hit 20 mpg for a 50 mile stretch.

I think think your Forester is broken... they're not great for high-speed cruising fuel economy, but they should be able to get 20+mpg still.

I used to drive a Nissan Juke as my commuter car, and with it's 1.6 turbo and a 13-gallon tank I was only able to get around 250 miles/tank (23mpg average). Now with the Expedition I regularly hit 20-22mpg on interstate trips, running 80mph, and can make it 550-600 miles between fill-ups.

Or the tank from a Max... they're probably interchangeable. They offer the 36 gallon tank as an option on the pickups.
My guess would be you need the extra 12 inches in length to fit the tank, otherwise why wouldn't they offer it as an option on the regular?

my old 01 F150 has a 26gal tank, but compared to my 2012 f150 with the 36gal the extra is just so nice. Our new 21 max with nearly 28 is decent. Haven't taken a road trip yet where we go through a full tank without stopping.

Stupid of Ford to reduce the fuel capacity on the standard length from previous 28 gal. Just another reason for keeping my current 2017 Expy
They had to. The repackaging of the interior and 10 speed forced a smaller fuel tank. Same thing happened when gm redid their fs suvs.

That is the whole purpose of engineering. Improve products without taking away capability and / or features.

The old 97 suburban had a 42 gallon tank… (an ‘up hill both ways’ moment).

Maybe they - whoever ‘they’ are - are trying to get us used to the smaller range of electric vehicles? The same ‘them’ might start slowing down the rate that gas can be pumped, too.

You know, you might have something there. My 2002 Diesel Excursion had a 44 Gallon tank. I could run over 725 miles without refueling. Even towing, I could get over 500.

Currently with my 2017 / 28 Gallon setup, I am getting close to 500 miles between fills on a road trip, which is fine (I'm refueling with about 3 gallons remaining). Unfortunately, when towing my car trailer the MPG drops from 20 to 12.5 and I'm refueling about every 300 miles.

I had a 1988 Ford Bronco that had a 32 gallon tank and that thing was at least 2 feet shorter than the Expedition.

I've been off and on researching how to get a bigger tank in an Expy, there are no plug and play options at the moment. Other threads where people have asked aftermarket manufacturers about a tank it has come down to EPA. It's an emissions controlled part and getting a new tank certified is very expensive and not worth it for the Expedition market. Someone is going to have to roll their own. Hopefully you can adjust your tank size in Forscan if we figure out a bigger tank.

Then best option is, second tank in place of spare tire. When main tank is low, flip switch and refill main tank from the second.

Getting off the subject for a second, I see you are from Rising Sun MD. We raced our Mustangs at Cecil County Dragway for about 15 years. That track has some amazing hook, broke a lot of parts there.

I admit I’d like a bigger tank because we tow a travel trailer. I have the short version with 23 gallons. The Max would get me to 28 gallons. I can get 36 gallons in an F150, but neither my wife nor I wants a pickup truck as our daily driver.

We love the Expedition. If I need a new vehicle before my wife retires (I am retired) I would go with the expedition Max because we just don’t have the time now to do very long or very often trips. When she retires I'm guessing a F150 will be in our garage.

Yep, I used to race my Mercury Marauder there. Ran 11.98 in 1/4 mile in cold air, low 12's all day. Look up "Defyant Maruader". There are posts and videos out there if your interested. Sadly I mainly posted on Streetfire.net when that was a thing. Its gone and my content with it. Fun car with room for carseats and full trunk for family stuff. I refused to have a minivan lol! Regrettably, sold it. These days I mess with the 2019 Bullitt and an old '55 Ford.

I love those big Merc's, they are awesome cars, saw one for sale on Bring a Trailer last week.

We had 98 and 95 Cobra's when we raced at Cecil. The 98 was a low 12 car and the 95 a low 10 car. Our club, Superstallions, rented the track 2X a year, plus we went to some other clubs events there throughout the year as well as E-town and Atco (both gone now!). Cecil was my favorite, though, we all had a lot of fun there. We used to all stay at the Crystal Inn just down the street from the track and eat at Woody's Crab House down in Northeast.
