While driving on the interstate the vehicle went into low power mode and the engine temperature started to climb. I pulled over and opened the hood. There was coolant coming from the passenger side of the engine. Had it towed to the shop. Thinking this issue may have been linked to the cam phaser repair that was done approx 3 weeks prior. Dealer said it was a blown lower coolant hose and suggested to change both hoses which I agreed to. The cost was $1400. Has anyone else experienced this? Does this cost sound right? I can't believe a hose blew with only 75k miles and 4 year old SUV. Of course its not covered under the extended warranty. Very unhappy with Ford.

Does not seem right. The rubber synth design on today's hoses are way better than years ago. It could have done it by itself but seems suspect since those hoses were most likely removed during the cam phaser work.

My question is if hose was in question why did the dealer note it and inform you. Hoses show signs of being spongy and very pliable which an observant tech could easily check. Just my opinion.

And $1400 for two hoses, absolutely absurd. For that they should be made of silver threaded silicon or something. I've replaced entire radiators and all hoses on previous cars for under $700.

I'd say you got pretty ripped.

Maybe they charged you labor time while the fluid was draining. $175/hr to watch it drain?

Kind of ****** me off how these dealers basically RIP you off. Had an X5 in years ago for TSB and they wanted to change the cabin and air filters for $400. I said the same OEM filters on Amazon are less than $40 and takes 5 min to change. Also in 2004 on a trip the radiator blew out on my BMW 540. The dealer charged $700 for a $150 rad. Sad they do this.

well and unfortunately when a tow truck drops off a vehicle, they know the owner won't have much of a choice. Very few people will turn around and pay to have the vehicle towed back to home to do the job themselves.

So it wasn't the actual hose that failed but the plastic fittings that connect the hoses. Labor was $1000. The dealer said that these hoses were not touched during the cam phaser repair. Not believing that story.

Water hoses, other--

I've kept my old 2004 Expedition XLT 4X4 (with NBX off road package). Its year round duty the last 10 years has been mostly being hooked to my 21ft Allison bassboat to make launching easy. The 2004 was built 12/03 and still has all the original water/heater hoses after 19 years and 205K. I did drain the coolant after 14 years--but, unbelievably the coolant was not all that bad. Professional tech and friend Gene H. replaced the plugs and the power packs and one plug and power pack twice. The vehicle has the same original 5.4L 2V engine, alternator, water pump, tranny, transfer case, axles, wiper motors, radio & CD, and other as it came from the factory. Squirrels got the original serpentine belt and some wiring and Gene has replaced a control in the rear AC unit a few times. BTW, squirrel damage per the above and to fuel lines, $$ for pulling gas tanks to get to squirrel damaged return fuel/vapor lines, may have been my most expensive running Expedition repairs--lately have had better "squirrel success" with Tomcat liquid Animal Repellant. The 2004 "played hard" in the early years---but got three tranny oil changes, 5K oil & filter changes, other maintenance. Still it is amazing how the 2004 Expedition starts on the first crank and still sounds new like. No reason to suspect cam phaser issues. (Will go for new water hoses if driven out on the interstate highway, off roading, etc. Only drive it to the golf course a few times a year.) Have owned six new Expeditions since MY 2000.

I just had the same hoses replaced. Repaired locally. Not at dealer. OEM hoses were $500. Cost $1200 to replace. Also not happy with ford.
2018 max limited. With 50k miles.

I had the plastic Y fitting develop a crack and leak. So yes, these hoses do fail. I replaced the lower hose. It was a bugger to replace, but like 2 hours. Now that I've done it, it might be a 30 min job. I will say I'm having trouble with air in the coolant or something, though.
