The past couple of weeks my Expy has started bogging down/loosing power while under light to moderate acceleration, mainly from a stop. I'm not throwing any codes or engine lights, idles fine and cruises fine. Had new plugs installed 32k ago when motor was rebuilt (rest of vehicle has 240k) and had a coil go bad about 10k ago. This was not really a problem untill the temps around here started getting up above 85 degrees F and seems to do better at night after the temps cool off some. Running or not running the a/c seems to make no difference.

Any suggestions?

Whens the last time you changed your fuel filter? On my in laws ranger it lost a lot of power and mileage due to a mouse nest in the air filter housing. Just a thought.

IAC or TPS. Both worth checking

Check transmission oil. That happened to me when tranny had low oil before it got really harsh and scary.

Fuel filter was changed about 10k ago when I replaced a bad COP. Air filter was changed roughly two months ago. I read something about TSB about this issue and having to reflash the PCM with updated calibrations, something about the intake air temp. Was going to try that as a last resort as many people say it did not help the issue any. I am still getting about 17-18 MPG on the highway which is normal. Trans fluid looks to be at correct level as well.

I will check the TPS and IAC though. Any way to check those before replacing?

you can test their voltage to see if the range is okay and it will show if they are good.

We went on a trip to Panama City Beach for the holiday weekend (about 1,500 miles round trip) and I noticed that especially when going up hills I really had to get on the gas even after it had kicked out of OD. Granted I had a full load of people and gear but still.

The one thing I noticed during all of this though was that almost every time I went to go up any decent hill where I had to let the RPMs get up I would smell the distinct smell of a bad catalytic converter... My question now is, is it possible for a bad cat to cause this bogging down problem without having any warning lights lit up on the dash? I mean obviously I'm going to have to get new cats, just wondering if you guys think that will clear up my other issues.

To not answer your question: maybe.

Its not a bad answer. A bad/blocked cat would cause the "bog down" as you describe, and more noticably at higher RPMs (and from stop in gear 1, and from speed in gear 4). I certainly would not be surprised if this solved your problem. Make sure your hangers on the exhaust are well attached, since you may shake a CATBack part loose when it begins working correclt. Don't ask about my muffler on the interstate...
