I didn’t notice any sounds till my wife’s expedition started sitting extended time (3 - 10 days) without being driven. Now when it starts there is a few seconds of rattling but only if it’s sets for a few days. I had cam phaser changed on my 18 F150 at 10K miles due to rattling but it sounded different.

I’ve sent the video to the dealer (Lincoln dealer) to see if they can pre-order parts but they have to diagnosis before they can order parts. I’m worried it I’ll get the default “can’t duplicate the issue” because the engine doesn’t do it when warm or if it hasn’t sit for extended periods. I’m trying to avoid 4-weeks of down time like I had with my F150 at a ford dealer.

Has Ford revised the cam phasers in the past 6-12 months?

My local Lincoln dealer was able to replicate the issue and is performing the following service.

SSM 48445 - 2017-2018 F-150, 2018-2019 Expedition/Navigator - 3.5L EcoBoost - Ticking/Tapping Or Rattle Type Noise On Start Up After A Cold Soak

Some 2017-2018 F-150 vehicles built on or before 10-Jul-2018 and 2018-2019 Expedition/Navigator vehicles built on or before 8-Apr-2019 with 3.5L EcoBoost may exhibit tick, tap, or rattle type noises from top of engine front cover for 2-5 seconds after a cold start. Replace all 4 VCT units (6256/6C525) and update the PCM calibration. Do not replace other camshaft timing related components unless inspection identifies a concern. Refer to the Workshop Manual, Section 303-01. Claim labor to replace VCTs using published labor operations and PCM programming using M-time. Dealers should order parts only when required to complete a repair. Once the parts are ordered, the vehicle may be returned to the customer to drive. This condition does not affect long term durability or performance.

Take it in and mention the cold start rattle and show them your video. That’s what I did and my service guy had me leave the truck overnight. I dropped my truck off this past Monday and was updated today (Tuesday) that the repairs are finished and should have my vehicle back by Wednesday. They performed the repair posted above.

There are updated parts now. However, I have no idea how I’m supposed to know whether they used the updated parts or not. I just assume they did.

Thank you for keeping us updated!

Its interesting they targeted builds until April of 19. I was under the impression the new parts were available (maybe to service depts?) in October. That or the phasers are different from the VCTs themselves?

My 2018 sounded exactly the same and is currently in the dealership having the cam phasers replaced. Will see if it resolves the sound.

Ford's very own pandemic. I haven't counted on just this forum alone, but we have a healthy handful of thread on the issue. If one were to combine the F-150 fleet, it could (probably should) merit its own sub forum. Yes, I am a pissed off Ford customer.

I did not have any codes for the phasers and don’t think they would throw any. I don’t think the phaser issue sounded like a tapping noise from what I heard. Will be curious about what you have going on.
