Where is the coolant temp sensor located on a 2001 Expy with a 5.4? This is the one that controls the temperature gauge in the dash. I looked through the forums but haven't found anything yet. Any help would be appreciated.

On my 2000 in is in the drivers side head under the intake manifold and its a dry port. No direct contact with the coolant. I don't recall any other coolant temp sensors when I swapped the motor so my guess is the gauge gets its info from the pcm.

I do know they vary by model year though. Some had a sensor in the intake manifold coolant passage.

my 97 has the one in the head and two more in the coolant passage way on the intake. I can read the cyl head and one of the sensors in the torque app I have.

From what I have been able to garner.. there is no direct ( analog style ) sender to coolant temp gauge setup. I " believe" between the CHTS and the CTS the computers break out an abacus... and " manufacture " a signal ( via serial communications ) to be decoded in the dash to to water temp gauge.. Is this not the case ? But then again I'm still trying to build a brute PC laptop to run the shop manual so I can see the schematic's.

If I were to guess I would say the non-pi heads / intake have sensor in the intake coolant passage as well but the PI heads / intake only have a single CHT temp sensor in the head. That or it is purely model year related. My 2000 only has the CHT sensor and it is under the intake, drivers side but would difficult to see without removing the lower intake.

If you check out the following photo I posted in my build thread (pulling original motor) you can see the sensor directly under where the t stat would go.

Looking at the photo it looks like fun to get at that sensor (unless the engine is torn down).
