First of all, I'm new here. Not new to forums in general, but just registered for this forum.

Thinking of trading the wifey's Jeep Commander for an Expedition EL. I've got a 4dr Jeep Wrangler on one tons and 41's and I need something I can tow it with reliably. The Commander is rated at 7200lbs. Since my JK weighs ~6,000 alone, that's not gonna cut it.

I've been looking at the EL with the HD tow package. If my research is correct, this should be rated at 8,700lbs towing. I found a trailer that'll work and it weights right at 2,600lbs. I still need to weigh my JK, but I think 6,000 is a pretty close guess (maybe a little high, but not too much). Theoretically, assuming my Jeep weighs 6,000lbs, with the trailer at 2,600, I'm right at 8,600lbs. If the EL is spec'd at 8,700 am I too close for comfort?

I'm, obviously, gonna need a WD hitch setup on the Exp, but that's easy enough.

How many of you have towed right up to the EL's capacity. Did it do fine? How did it pull up hills? I'm assuming I can expect low teens to high single digits mileage pulling that much, right? Anything I'm missing?

FWIW, I've got 3 kids that I'd be "hauling", too, so while a CREW CAB truck would be a more ideal tow rig, I don't think I'd make it cross country listening to the screaming and fighting in the back for that long. :D

Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you want a little more wiggle room, the EL takes a 300 to 500 pound tow weight penalty as the extra length adds weight to the Expy...

The non-EL with tow package can hit 8900 to 9200 towing depending on year. With the non-EL, you at losing a foot or so behind the 3rd row seat.

WD hitch is a must on that level...

I peaked mine at about 6200 and it did feel like 6200 pounds. MPG was much lower at 11... But I could keep up with Semis and bigger trucks...

At the limit I don't know... We got a couple here who have been there...
