Depends on your priorities. I've had both Expeditions and put over 220k miles on the first gen 2 valve 5.4. That engine had only 230 HP but towed a boat and all kinds of trailers. The engine always had a strange intermittent ticking and burned a little oil. I always serviced my own plugs, so even with the minimum plug threads, I never had a problem. I'm aware, from reading this forum, that there is more performance equipment for the two valve, maybe because it's been around longer for the after market to develop. Then there's the supercharged lightening swap that wasn't available later with the 3V. That could be had aftermarket on the 3valve with Roush, Whippel or Edelbrock if you have deep pockets.
That motor comes out of the box with 300HP. I have a paper from Ford supposedly protecting me from an issue with the variable timing
camshafts failing, but there's a cap on the mileage so time will tell.
I still have around 67k on mine, so I don't have a problem waiting to do the split plugs. I'll have a tool handy if I break any and I'll reinstall with upgraded 1 piece plugs and that will be the end of that problem. So to me, I'm enjoying the 3valve so far, because I didn't have to sink in the TON of money it would cost to bring a 230/260 HP 2valve up to 300HP and the greater torque of the 3valve. Hopefully, I don't suffer the issues some of these 3v's have had from reading this forum.
